Under
the Radar:
Women in Film in the Kinsey Era
February 14-26, 2003
Kinsey's
report on female sexuality was not the only shocking evidence of women
as sexual beings in the mid 20th century. Both mainstream and underground
films portrayed themes of gender and sexuality, many of which were
delayed, modified or completely banned by the censorship board. This
week-long film festival showcases women directors, lesbian films,
and female stars who tested the censors' ratings in their various
portrayals of sex and gender. Also featured will be a special screening
of historical stag films from the Kinsey collection. |

Linda Williams PhD, Professor in the Departments of
Film Studies and Rhetoric, Univ.of California at Berkeley |
Linda Williams teaches courses on popular moving-image genres (pornography,
melodrama, and "body genres" of all sorts) and is currently interested
in the emergence of explicit sex acts in moving-image culture. In 1989 she
published a controversial study of porno-graphic film entitled Hard Core:
Power, Pleasure and the Frenzy of the Visible (second edition 1999), which
included stag films from the Kinsey Institute collection. Williams's latest
book is Playing the Race Card: Melodramas of Black and White, from Uncle
Tom to O.J.Simpson (2001, Princeton).
