Produced by Majestic Pictures, one of the small "poverty row" film companies that existed outside of the 1930s Hollywood machine, The Sin of Nora Moran (1933) told the tragic story of a woman (Zita Johann) who took the rap for a crime that her lover committed. This rather serious—and not particularly sexy—plot is not evident in the film’s promotional poster, however. Instead, the poster depends on selling the sex appeal of its star and hopes that potential audience members will assume that the "sin" of the title refers not to a lover’s crime but rather to something much more lurid.
