Jurors for the Kinsey Institute Juried Art Show 2008

Herbert Ascherman

Herbert Aschermanís professional career has spanned 32 years as a photographer, gallery founder and director, writer and historian.

Since opening his studio in 1975, Herb has established an international reputation for his black and white and platinum portraiture. He has had numerous one-man exhibitions of his portraiture, photojournalism and nude work in Paris, Tokyo and India, as well as in galleries and museums throughout the United States. Herb established the Cleveland Photographic Workshop in 1977 as a non-profit exclusively photographic gallery that held over 170 contiguous exhibits (until its closing in 2005) of contemporary photographers drawn from a worldwide network of associations.

Having written numerous articles on contemporary and classic photography, drawing largely in part from his 2000 volume photo book library, Herb has published and lectured for over 150 local, national and international organizations and conferences.

Catherine Johnson-Roehr

Catherine Johnson-Roehr has been the Curator of Art, Artifacts, and Photographs at The Kinsey Institute since July 2000. She has masterís degrees in art history from the University of Oregon and library science from Indiana University.

As curator at The Kinsey Institute, Catherine maintains and provides access to a unique and valuable collection of artwork, photographs, ephemera, and other visual research materials. She organizes public exhibitions from the collection, and manages requests from researchers and the media. As The Kinsey Institute does not have funds to acquire artwork and other materials, Catherine works closely with donors to expand the scope of the collection through gifts of artwork and artifacts. She has edited several exhibition catalogs, including Sex and Humor: Selections from The Kinsey Institute and Feminine Persuasion: Art and Essays on Sexuality, both published by Indiana University Press.

Her most recent project is an exhibition titled Expressive Bodies: Contemporary Art Photography from The Kinsey Institute, which will travel to several venues in Indiana in 2007-2008.

Pet Silvia

Pet Silvia, artist and co-owner of the gallery, Art at Large in New York, has been curating exhibitions of art which celebrate the human body and sexuality, for over 15 years.

Between 1996 and 1999, Pet did a weekly cable TV show in Manhattan, The Malignant Muse. He promoted the work of unknown artists, and poked fun at the art world establishment because, "they deserve it." He was instrumental, through his association with the Tom of Finland Foundation, in starting the annual New York Erotic Art Fair Weekend, held every May in New York City, since 2001. All of his involvement's have helped make him a trailblazing advocate for what he calls, "Art That Excites!" with an equal understanding of those who make this art, and those who hang it on their walls.
