MDL CrossFire Commander is a client/server software that provides access to the Beilstein Handbook of Organic Chemistry and the Gmelin Handbook of Inorganic and Organometallic Chemistry. Between the two handbooks, they cover the entire range of modern chemical knowledge from its beginnings in the 18th century. The MDL CrossFire Commander database is only available on computers on which the software has been loaded. The software is loaded on workstations in the Indiana University Kokomo Library.

SciFinder Scholar is a client/server software which allows searching of the Chemical Abstracts Service databases. The SciFinder Scholar database is only available on computers on which the software has been loaded. The software is loaded on workstations in the Indiana University Kokomo Library.

Usage Restrictions
Access to these database are restricted to current faculty, staff, and students of Indiana University Kokomo. The database(s) may be used only for the purposes of research and study associated with Indiana University Kokomo research projects and courses. Data may not be copied or used for any commercial purpose, or for the benefit of any party external to Indiana University Kokomo. Copyright information included by the database owners may not be obscured or removed. Connecting to the database constitutes acceptance of these conditions.
Access outside the Library. To use MDL CrossFire Commander or SciFinder Scholar on other campus computers the client/server software must be installed on your computer. First check to make sure if the software is available on the computer you are using. If it is not available, if you would like to use this software please send a request to the IU Kokomo Help Desk.
Directions to access MDL CrossFire Commander:
- Login to a Library computer.
- Locate the IUK VPN icon on the desktop and login with:

- Click on the Connect button.
- Click on the Start button in the lower left hand corner of the screen.
- When the window opens choose Programs.
- When the Programs windows opens choose MDL CrossFire Commander 7.0.
- When the MDL CrossFire Commander window opens choose MDL CrossFire Commander 7.0 to open the database. (Please note there are also reference guides to assist in searching the database.)
- The database screen should open and allow you to select the database(s) to be searched. Click on one or more databases and click on the OK button.
- If you are prompted for a username and password please contact a Librarian at the Ask A Librarian service desk.
- After using the database please make sure to:
exit the database,
disconnect (logout) of the IUK VPN connection,
and log off of the computer.

- Login to a Library computer.
- Locate the IUK VPN icon on the desktop and login with:

- Click on the Connect button.
- Click on the Start button in the lower left hand corner of the screen.
- When the window opens choose Programs.
- When the Programs windows opens choose SciFinder Scholar 2006.
- When the SciFinder Scholar window opens choose SciFinder Scholar to open the database.
- A database screen will open with a SciFinder Scholar License Agreement box. Please read the license information and click on the Accept button to proceed.
- After using the database please make sure to:
select the Exit button on the toolbar to exit the database,
disconnect (log off) of the IUK VPN connection,
and log off of the computer.
