Alumni Information
Summer Science Program 1978

SSP'78 was held June 19 to July 30, 1978 at the Thacher School in Ojai, California. For a class picture of SSP'78, click here. Also check in the table below for links to individual memories, anecdotes, photos, etc.

The Summer Science Program (http://www.summerscience.org/) has general information about the program and other years' alumni pages.

Your suggestions and contributions are welcome. Contact John Kruschke at kruschke@indiana.edu. I'm happy to expand these pages to include anecdotes, links, etc. Just let me know what you would like! It is wonderful to learn about each others' successes, of course, but I hope also that some of you might be willing to tell us about struggles or `non-traditional' achievements. I think that people interested in SSP tend to be open minded and interested in the full variety of life's paths, especially when lived by thoughtful people.

The class representative for SSP'78 is Matt Ragen, searagen@msn.com. Contact Matt regarding matters other than this web page.

In 1978 was Professor of Astronomy at El Camino College, and Academic Director of SSP. Updated November 2000: "BS and MS Engineering (UCLA), Ph.D. Astronomy (Yale). 30+ years experience teaching Astronomy, Physics, Math, History of Science at the college level. I've worked for 20+ years in the aerospace industry, including Voyager Mission to the outer planets at the Jet Propulsion Lab. I was with SSP from 1974-85 and in 1993. My current interests include teaching, reading, walking, gardening (orchids and cactus, not together), volleyball (still), weightlifting, my church (Presbyterian), and travel to foreign countries (25) and National Parks (40). In addition, I'm constructing and teaching an Astronomy course online." A photo of Dr. Pierce at Stonehenge, July 2000.

Updated November 2000: "After 1978 I took an MA in Astronomy from Berkeley, worked for several years for the Jet Propulsion Laboratories in Pasadena, then returned to Berkeley to finish a Ph.D. -- this time in Science and Mathematics Education -- in 1987. I worked in a teacher-education project in Berkeley for a few more years. Since about 1992 I've been a free-lance math educator, whatever that is, with clients ranging from WGBH Boston to the State of California to the Edmonds (Washington) School District. The most fun I've had in work recently was to be on the design team for Fathom (TM), a really fabulous stats and data analysis software package, published by Key Curriculum Press. I've been married for ages; our 13-year-old daughter is getting ready for high school next fall; and a couple years ago, I took up the cello. I'm not worthy yet to accompany Zook's oboe playing, but if I practice enough..."

In 1978 was graduate student at U.C. Berkeley. Now Professor of Physics at Pomona. She writes (April 2000): "I chaired the department from 1992-1995 and am likely to have to do so again (since it rotates with a three-year period). I share a house with five cats, or maybe they share it with me. About 15 years ago I started taking oboe lessons and have become fairly serious about it, playing in both the College concert band and orchestra. Now that Pomona's one-meter telescope at Table Mountain is operational (if not always cooperative), I've gone back to optical observational astronomy. This time it's photometry of blazars rather than spectroscopy of red giants, though."

Updated November 2000: "AB Stanford, 1983; Ph.D. University of Wisconsin, Madison 1990 in Neuroscience. I'm living in Boulder, CO with my husband and our 2 year old daughter. I'm a Scientist in Research and Development at a biotech company called BioStar, which develops rapid diagnostic tests for infectious diseases. Boulder is a great place for star gazing, and it seems many of our neighbors are want-to-be astronomers too, so we have on occasion gazed through one of the neighborhood telescopes at heavenly bodies (in the sky)."

January 2000: "B.S. in Physics and Applied Math, Caltech, 1983, Ph. D. in Physics, Harvard, 1987. TA at SSP `83 & `84. Married to Elizabeth H. Simmons (SSP`80, currently also on faculty of Boston University Physics Dept.); two children (Ari, born 1991 & Anand, born 1999). Joined the BU Physics Department in 1987. My area of research is theoretical particle physics; in particular I am interested in electroweak symmetry breaking and the origin of mass."

My wife works for Teledesic (Internet in the sky) which is the closest I've come to orbital geometry since 1978. However, with the boys reaching telescope age, have been getting an itch for a new toy. (Recommendations welcome.)"

Updated March 2000: "I studied physics at Harvard University, receiving an A.B. (1983), A.M. (1985), and Ph.D. (1989). After graduate school, I did three years of postdoctoral work at UCLA, and then moved to the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC. I am working as a research physicist in the NRL's Center for Bio/Molecular Science and Engineering, where my research focuses on the theory of polymers, liquid crystals, lipid microstructures, and other complex fluids. I am married to another physicist, Robin Selinger, who is on the faculty at Catholic University, and we have two sons, Joseph (born 1991) and David (born 1994)."
