You are a content-area
reading specialist who has been asked to critique a
lesson
plan
of a 7th grade science teacher. You are reviewing the lesson plan to
determine the extent to which it is an example of a lesson that achieves the
following goals:
-
Effectively elicits
students' prior knowledge to prepare students to read a text.
-
Effectively supports students' efforts to
learn new
vocabulary to prepare students to read a text.
-
Effectively establishes a
specific purpose/focus for reading that is appropriate and is explicitly stated
to students.
-
Effectively
motivates students to read a text.
-
Effectively
provides students with an opportunity monitor their comprehension.
-
Effectively uses at least one
instructional reading strategy. (Instructional reading strategies include,
DRA, anticipation guides, Think Alongs, etc. The teacher who created this lesson
plan is using KWL.)
-
Effectively supports
students' efforts to become better, more strategic (metacognitive) readers.
Your review of this
lesson plan should include the following information:
Strengths
For each of the seven goals above, identify ways in
which this lesson plan supports the achievement of that goal. Be specific.
Explain why any elements of the lesson plan you identify are positive
aspects of the plan. (If you cannot identify a way in which this lesson plan
supports the achievement of one or more of the goals, say so and explain
why.)
Weaknesses
For each of the seven goals above, identify ways in which this lesson
plan fails to support the achievement of that goal. Be specific.
Explain why any elements of the lesson plan you identify are problematic
aspects of the plan. (If you cannot identify a way in which this lesson plan
fails to supports the achievement of one or more of the goals, say so and
explain why.)
For each problem you
identify in the lesson plan, offer a concrete suggestion for improving
it.

Creating and filling out a table, such as the
one below, has worked well for students in the past when completing this
assignment. This format for your work is just a suggestion. If you
feel that you would be more comfortable presenting your ideas in another way,
that's just fine. However, I encourage you not to complete this
assignment as an essay. There is no need. You are welcome (and encouraged) to
use bullets, numbers, headings, tables, etc.

Areas Scored |
Score Explanation |
-
Explanation of
ways in which the lesson plan does and does not support goal #1
(eliciting prior knowledge).
|
Each of
the seven areas in the left-hand column will receive a score out of 4:
4 = Excellent
Response is characterized by all of
the following elements:
 |
Thorough and accurate: All
major strengths and weaknesses are correctly identified. Well-explained and
appropriate suggestions for improving weaknesses are offered.
|
 |
Focused: Explanations
suggest a clear understanding of the goal and appropriate ways to achieve it.
|
 |
Detailed: Includes specific
details from the lesson plan to support assertions.
|
2 = Fair
Response is characterized by many
of the following elements:
 |
Somewhat incomplete and/or
inaccurate: Some major strengths and weaknesses are not identified or are
misidentified (a strength is identified as a weakness or a weakness is
identified as a strength). Suggestions for improving weaknesses are somewhat
vague or would not necessarily improve the lesson plan.
|
 |
Problematic Focus:
Explanations suggest that the goal itself is not completely understood or ways
to appropriately achieve it are not completely understood.
|
 |
Lacks Sufficient Detail:
Response is too general and lacks specific details from the lesson plan to
support assertions.
|
0 = Poor
Response is characterized by many
of the following elements:
 |
Incomplete and inaccurate:
Most major strengths and weaknesses are not identified or are misidentified (a
strength is identified as a weakness or a weakness is identified as a
strength). Suggestions for improving weaknesses are vague and/or would not
improve the lesson plan.
|
 |
Problematic Focus:
Explanations make it clear that the goal itself is not understood and that
ways to appropriately achieve it are understood.
|
 |
Lacks Sufficient Detail:
Response is very general, with no specific details from the lesson plan to
support assertions.
|
|

(teaching vocabulary).
|
-
Explanation of
ways in which the lesson plan does and does not support goal #3
(providing a purpose/focus).
|
-
Explanation of
ways in which the lesson plan does and does not support goal #4

|
-

ways in which the lesson plan does and does not support goal #6
(using an instructional reading strategy).
|
-
Explanation of
ways in which the lesson plan does and does not support goal #7
(encouraging strategic reading).
