Reading Assignment

Brozo & Simpson, Chapter 5

Lecture

Helping students read and comprehend a text involves providing support to students at all three stages of the reading process:

  1. Before reading
  2. During reading
  3. After reading

Following is a chart that illustrates what a teacher's goals should be at each of these stages:

STAGE TEACHER'S GOALS
BEFORE READING
bullet Activate students' prior knowledge.
bullet Provide vocabulary instruction if necessary.
bullet Establish one or more specific and explicit purposes for reading.
bullet Motivate students to read.
DURING READING
bullet Provide students with an activity that will allow them to monitor their comprehension in light of the purpose(s) for reading.
AFTER READING
bullet Provide students with the opportunity to assess their own comprehension of the text in light of the purpose(s) for reading.
bullet Extend and elaborate on ideas from the text.

Chapter 5 introduces you to the before reading stage.

Oncourse Activity

If you have any questions about how to post to Oncourse or what your responsibilities are for posting to Oncourse, please visit the L517 Posting to Oncourse web page.

DEBATE!

ORIGINAL POSTING--By the end of the day on Wednesday of this week post your response to the following topic on Oncourse.

Even if you don't agree with the stance you're given below, post a response on Oncourse as though you do.

Partner # 1: You think that some of the ideas and strategies for building interest and background in Chapter 5 of your textbook are cute and could be fun to try. However, deep down you feel that taking the time to do any of them would merely result in having less time to spend on your curriculum. Say more about why you feel like this. (If you don't truly believe this to be true, please pretend that you do and try to imagine why some teachers might feel this way.)

Also in your posting for this week, complete this sentence: Of all the strategies introduced in Chapter 5, I think that ______________ would be the strategy that I would be least likely to use with my students because...

Partner # 2:  You think that many of the ideas and strategies for building interest and background in Chapter 5 of your textbook are interesting and would be fun to try. Furthermore, you feel that taking the time to incorporate such ideas and strategies into your lessons would assist you in teaching your curriculum, and support your students' efforts to learn new material. Say more about why you feel like this. (If you don't truly believe this to be true, please pretend that you do and try to imagine why some teachers might feel this way.)

Also in your posting for this week, complete this sentence: Of all the strategies introduced in Chapter 5, I think that ______________ would be the strategy that I would be most likely to use with my students because...

RESPONSE TO PARTNER'S POSTING--By the end of the day on Friday of this week respond to your partner's posting.

Tell your partner what you actually do agree with in his/her posting as well as what you don't agree with. In other words, forget about the stance you were asked to take for your original posting, and respond to your partner's posting according to your own true beliefs. (Keep in mind that your partner may have written some things that he or she doesn't agree with, so be kind in your response to him/her J.)

CLOSING WORDS --By the end of of the day on Sunday, read your group's and one other group's postings for this topic and then reflect on both.
