Dr. Jorge Chapa

We are very sorry to share sad news of the passing Dr. Jorge Chapa, who died suddenly on Monday, October 19, 2015. From 1999 to 2006, Professor Chapa was the founding director of the IU's Latino Studies Program. He also held affiliations in Sociology, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, the School of Education, and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. In addition to being one of the nation's leading demographers of the Latina/o population, Professor Chapa was a steadfast advocate for greater educational access and equity for underrepresented populations. He co-authored, with Ann V. Millard, a landmark study of Latino communities in Indiana. A friend and mentor to IU faculty and students alike, Professor Chapa was, above all, kind man and loving father and husband. We send our most profound condolences to his wife Belinda de la Rosa and his sons, Juan and Roberto. We will forever be grateful for his pioneering leadership at Indiana University.
