"I was born in the village
of La Mesa de Navar, in the state of Durango, Mexico. My family and
I came to the United States when I was eight years old. I have always
been interested in the Iberian influence of North America. It wasn’t
until this past summer that I finally had the opportunity to conduct
my own research in New Mexico, with guidance from Professor John
Nieto-Phillips.
|
With a research grant from the Hutton Honors College,
I spent the summer of 2006 at the University of New Mexico’s
Center for Southwest Research, researching Catholic and Native
American religious traditions. Conducting research at one of the
nation’s premiere archives and visiting Latino and Native
American cultural sites as part of that project has encouraged
me to aim higher, to think historically, and to be original."
