LESA-L 101: Supplementary Service Learning Component, for 1-3 credits; usually 1 credit is added to an existing 3-credit course. This option, also known as the 4-th credit hour option, allows students to supplement existing academic courses with service-learning. The service-learning activities can be conducted over an intensive period (such as Spring Break) or run parallel with the academic course throughout the semester. Each credit hour should involve the student in 30- 45 hours of service, reflective writing, readings, and related activities.

If you, as the instructor, choose to make this option available to students in your course, you identify the community agency or agencies with which students will be working, (you may decide to consult Nicole Schonemann at Community Outreach and Partnerships in Service-Learning, 856-6011, copsl@indiana.edu) and create a detailed course syllabus for the service-learning component. A formal paper, integrating the service with the academic course, is strongly encouraged as a primary evaluative component.

A proposal form ** and guidelines for you to use is available. L101 will generate one section number and you will be listed as the instructor of record. This is a graded credit hour.

LESA-L 401: Independent Study in Service-Learning, for 1-3 credits. This option is intended for students who take their own initiative to add a service-learning component to a course they are taking, or design a service-learning course from scratch. There must be a connection between the academic subject matter and the service component of the course which can clearly be articulated by the student in the course proposal he or she completes. The student must have approval of a faculty advisor; if the service-learning is an add-on to a class being taken, the instructor of that course is the most appropriate advisor.

With this option, it is the student's responsibility to find the community agency (you may consult Nicole Schonemann at Community Outreach and Partnerships in Service-Learning, 856-6011,copsl@indiana.edu) and, with a faculty advisor, determine appropriate reading, service and reflection assignments. The faculty advisor will be the instructor of record. Students can find a course proposal** and guidelines for L401 here.
