*IUPUI University Library Premiere's New Look For 2000

The Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, University Library website has undergone a "face-lift," offering enhanced usability and accessibility. The new site is located at http://www.ulib.iupui.edu/, and was made available to the public on January 10, 2000.

Following months of assessment and review of the site, the University Library (UL) Digital Libraries Team, joined by other UL staff, proceeded with a Library Information System (LIS) redesign process. In November and December 1999, a test site was made available to library patrons and a usability study was conducted, all of which provided feedback to the team about the redesigned site.

The primary focus of the team was to create a new homepage that would be pleasing to the eye, as well as easier to navigate. A crisper, cleaner look emphasizes the content, rather than the style of the home page, and the new design is more flexible, allowing for continuous improvements to be made in the future. In addition, a significant result of the new design is a faster load time. This benefits patrons within the facility as well as those accessing it remotely, with the load time being decreased by nearly 50% for the remote user.

A new feature added to the LIS site is the "HOW TO USE THIS SITE: User Guide for the IUPUI University Library's Web Pages." The user guide is designed to assist patrons in locating library holdings, research and general reference resources within the library's web pages, as well as access to and printing of electronic course reserves.

For further information about the new UL website, contact Robin Crumrin, Digital Libraries Team Leader, at (317) 278-2327, or rcrumrin@iupui.edu.
