*I am pleased to announce the appointment of Melissa McAfee as the Head of the Preservation Department effective February 3, 2000. Currently, Collections Conservation Librarian in the General Libraries at the University of Texas at Austin, Melissa's prior work includes experience with both special and general collections. She served as the Head of the Rare Books and Special Collections Library at the American University in Cairo, Preservation Librarian at the University of Pittsburgh, Head Librarian for Special Collections at Colgate University and as Assistant to Rare Books Dealer, George S. MacManus Company in Philadelphia. Melissa's B.A. is from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in Classics; she also holds a MLS from Columbia University and a certificate in Bookbinding from the Roehampton Institute in London, England. With prior success in external fund-raising and preservation lab and workflow redesign, Melissa brings skills that are directly relevant to issues that the IU Libraries face in the coming years. Melissa will represent IU Libraries on the CIC Preservation Committee and is also a member of the Books and Paper Committee, which is part of ALA's Preservation and Reformatting (PARS) Section. Melissa, her husband, and two young children are looking forward to residing in Bloomington.
I would like to thank Phil Bantin for his leadership and other members of the Search & Screen Committee--Kris Brancolini, Lisa Browar, Jo Burges, BJ Irvine, Peggy Houston, Susie Trisler and Yolanda Cooper-Birdine--for bringing this search to a successful conclusion.
