*New online collection of 19th centruy American fiction
The Digital Library Program is pleased to announce the availability of a new online collection of American fiction published between 1851-1875. It's called "Wright American Fiction" after Lyle Wright, the librarian at the Huntington Library who compiled the bibliography on which the collection is based. The online collection is available at: http://www.letrs.indiana.edu/web/w/wright2/ and consists of over 1,700 novels and other works of fiction published between 1851-1875, with plans to add almost 1,300 more by the end of 2002 to complete the collection.
This is a joint project of many CIC libraries. The DLP and IU Libraries have supported this project greatly over the past 18 months. The DLP is hosting the website, providing administrative and technical support, and coordinating the project among the participants. Many IU librarians and staff attended the SGML training workshop given in November 2000--those who completed texts will find them available for searching and reading on the website.
More information about the project, participants, plans, etc. are available at the website.

*Dr. Patrick J. Furlong to speak at the Schurz Library AtriumWhat Exactly is a Hoosier?
Join Dr. Patrick J. Furlong as he answers that question and many others about Indiana on Tuesday, February 19, 2002, at 7:30 p.m. in the Schurz Library Atrium, IUSB. Dr. Furlong will talk about his latest book, Indiana: an Illustrated History, which was published in October 2001 by the American Historical Press. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
The boundaries which separate Indiana from its neighboring states are not just arbitrary lines drawn across a map. The states of the American union develop a personality of their own, a complex blend of geography, history, and culture which dramatically distinguishes one from another. So begins Patrick J. Furlongs examination of the Hoosier state. Indiana: an Illustrated History is over 300 pages of stories - tales of bravery, vision, hope, and humor. Professor Furlong is a master storyteller, and these stories enliven the book as he covers Indiana history from the days of the frontier to the new century. Over 350 black and white and color photos illustrate the book.
Patrick J. Furlong has shared his love for American history with his students at Indiana University South Bend since 1967. Published widely in journals including Traces of Indiana History and the Indiana Magazine of History, Professor Furlong is also a popular speaker for historical societies and service clubs across the state. He was also the historical consultant for the award-winning television program, Studebaker: Less Than They Promised. Dr. Furlong is currently chairman of the history department and director of the Master of Liberal Studies Program at IUSB.
