*Lisa Reynolds, who has served as my secretary for two years even as she worked on her library degree part time, is leaving to finish that degree this semester. Lisa wants to be a reference librarian in a public library and particularly one that allows her to work in the Hispanic community. She has done a splendid job, and I hope you will join me in wishing her the very best. We will miss her.
At the same time, we welcome Sarah Wyatt, who will be filling in temporarily on a part-time basis. Sarah comes to us from Danville, Virgina, where she worked as a receptionist and clerical assistant. Sarah has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Virgina. Please stop by to welcome Sarah!

*I regret to announce that Dennis Gillespie has accepted the position of Support Center Manager at UITS effective January 15th. We are sad to see Dennis leave, but wish him the best of luck. He will still be working closely with us on the Information Commons, and in support for Unicorn.
During the search process to fill this position, I have asked Vern Wilkins to act as the Assistant Director of Information Technology/Operations Manager. This appointment is effective January 15, 2001, and will continue until the position is filled. Vern has been the LIT hardware specialist for the Libraries since 1998. He has been responsible for the programming and set up of the workstation builds on all staff and public workstations. He has also been instrumental in assisting Dennis in the planning and implementation of workstation replacements. He has an excellent technical background as well as an MLS degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and an MS in Exercise Physiology from Indiana University. We appreciate Vern's willingness to serve in this capacity.

*WebCat: Beyond the Basics -- Workshops for Public Services Staff
There are still a few spaces left in the WebCat: Beyond the Basics Workshops. To meet the demand we have added two workshops: January 29 at Bloomington and February 1 at Fort Wayne. There is still space available in the following sessions:
Wednesday, January 24
University Library -- IUPUI (Room UL0106)
1:00 - 3:00 pm
Monday, January 29
Main Library - Bloomington (Room E172)
1:30 - 3:30 pm
Thursday, February 1
IPFW Library
1:00 - 3:00 pm
To ensure we have adequate space for everyone, please sign up for a preferred time. You may register by contacting Nonie Watt at wattn@indiana.edu indicating your preference. Additional workshops may be scheduled if demand warrants.
The sessions include an in-depth look at the features and functionality of the new OPAC. Before attending the workshop, it would be helpful for participants to have completed the WebCat online tutorial found at http://www.indiana.edu/~sirsi/webcat and to have at least some minimal experience using the WebCat. The objective of these workshops is to follow up on that basic instruction, with more attention paid to sophisticated search techniques as well as features of the system that may be less intuitive, all in a "live" environment rather than a test database. In addition, instructional handouts that could be adapted for local library usage are provided.
Coming later in January and in February will be follow-up sessions, entitled Introduction to WorkFlows, designed to train public services staff in locating information only available from the staff side of Unicorn. The schedule will be announced soon.

Ameritech Grant Awarded To IUPUI University Library Faculty Member
The Ameritech Fellows Program recently announced the award of a grant of $14,800 to IUPUI University Library faculty member Michelle Fiander, one of five IUPUI faculty members to receive such a grant. Grants are awarded to promote innovation in teaching and learning as facilitated through the use of information technology.
Fiander, who joined the University Library faculty in 1998 as a Reference and Cataloging Librarian, stated that the grant funds will support the development of an "Interactive Virtual Reference Desk. " This virtual reference service will be a tool for promoting information literacy and will be available online within the coming year. Using Web collaboration software, the virtual desk will allow distance learners and patrons outside of University Library to receive research assistance from librarians at the University Library Reference Desk. A Virtual Reference Desk will offer live, interactive reference services over the Web, and librarians can "push" Web pages to the patron's browser, escort patrons around the Web and search databases together with patrons.
Created in 1999, the Ameritech Fellows Program established support with a total of $1,000,000 to Indiana University faculty members in their efforts to integrate information technology into campus and distance education. The Fellows Program is provided with the support of the IU Office of Distributed Education and the UITS Teaching and Learning Information Technologies.
For further information about the development of the IUPUI University Library Interactive Virtual Reference Desk, please contact Michelle Fiander at (317) 274-0487 or mfiander@iupui.edu.
