*International Miniature Book Collection On Display At IUPUI

The University Library (UL) of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) has announced the presentation of a collaborative display of miniature books from the collections of the Miniature Book Society, Inc., the Lilly Library of Indiana University, Bloomington and the Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives of the IUPUI University Library. The exhibit, "Miniature Books of the World," is currently open to the public through January 28, 2000 in the UL Level One Lobby.

The Miniature Book Society, Inc. is an international non-profit organization founded in Ohio in 1983, and is focused on an art of book printing and collecting that was formally established during the Middle Ages. As a means of fulfilling it purpose to "encourage the love of miniature books," the Society has established a national traveling exhibit that includes over 100 books. The current traveling collection features Old King Cole, the smallest book in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Also featured in the national touring exhibition is Where and What and Whom, a 1997 Distinguished Book Award Winner by Paul Brown, Associate Dean of the Herron School of Art at IUPUI. The 24-page book is 3" X 2" and is published by Brown Trout Press, Bloomington, Indiana.

The Ruth Adomeit Collection of Miniature Books, comprised of 16,000 items, was received in the form of a bequest to the Lilly Library of Indiana University, Bloomington in 1996. The full collection includes several materials dating back to 2000 B.C., with a majority representing printings from the early 1600's on the European continent to the American Far West through 1870. On display at the University Library will be a portion of the collection including: The History and Description of the Famous Cathedral of St. Paul's London, 1741; Portraits of the Sovereigns of England, with drawings by Alfred Mills, 1817; A Weed Among the Flowers, by Graham Greene, 1990.

A sampling of miniature books that are housed in the UL Ruth Lilly Special Collections & Archives, will supplement the Level One display, and will include: Maximiliano et Elisabeth, published in 1629; The Blind Beggar, from the 1800's; English-French Dictionary, a 20th century publication.
