*Effective January 16, Michael Bradford accepted the position of Fast Track Serials Cataloger in the Technical Services/Cataloging Department at IU-Bloomington. Prior to accepting this position, Michael worked in Technical Services/Cataloging as the Serials Conversion Coordinator for the Lilly Library. He is pursuing an MLS degree.
*Taemin K. Park, Technical Services Department, IU Bloomington, won the Marcia Tuttle International Grant for 2001. The grant will assist Taemin's trip to China to present her paper on library education in information organization and access of networked resources including online serials at the 13th International Conference on New Information Technology, Beijing, China May 29-31, 2001.
*Two Retirements this Spring
Later this spring, IU Bloomington Libraries will lose two of their senior librarians to retirement. Lois Heiser, Head of the Geology Library, has announced her April 30th retirement and Thomas Lee, Librarian for the East Asian Collection, will retire at the end of June. While we rejoice in their many contributions and good fortune in retiring, we will also sorely miss the expertise and collegiality that they bring to our mission. Please extend your congratulations and best wishes to them. Information about filling these positions and the formation of Search & Screen Committees will be forthcoming shortly.
Martha Brogan, Associate Dean

*Changes at the Main Library, IU Bloomington
The services of Media/Reserves, Kent Cooper Current Periodicals, and Microforms Services have been combined into one new service point, now located in a newly renovated space on the lower level. One staff desk remains in the microforms area but customers are being served at one service point for the newly combined operation. Phones have been transferred so numbers remain the same.
New furniture for users and staff as well as new paint, carpet, and video storage were part of the move. We will plan an open house with tours this semester so watch for announcements. In the meantime, stop in and see the changes. The former first floor location of media and reserves eventually will be transformed into the Information Commons. Until work begins, we will use it as a study area.
Patricia Steele, Head, Customer & Access Services

*WebCat: Beyond the Basics -- Workshops for Public Services Staff
The January 29 WebCat: Beyond the Basics Workshop in Bloomington is full. We have added one more Bloomington session. These will be the last Beyond the Basics Workshop sessions unless we have additional demand. There is still space available in the following sessions:
Tuesday, January 30
Main Library - Bloomington (Room E172)
1:00 - 3:00 pm
Thursday, February 1
IPFW Library -- Fort Wayne
1:00 - 3:00 pm
To ensure we have adequate space for everyone, please sign up for a preferred time. You may register by contacting Nonie Watt at wattn@indiana.edu indicating your preference. If you have not signed up, we cannot guarantee a seat in the session for you.
The sessions include an in-depth look at the features and functionality of the new OPAC. Before attending the workshop, it would be helpful for participants to have completed the WebCat online tutorial found at http://www.indiana.edu/~sirsi/webcat and to have at least some minimal experience using the WebCat. The objective of these workshops is to follow up on that basic instruction, with more attention paid to sophisticated search techniques as well as features of the system that may be less intuitive, all in a "live" environment rather than a test database. In addition, instructional handouts that could be adapted for local library usage are provided.
Introduction to WorkFlows, designed to train public services staff in locating information only available from the staff side of Unicorn, will begin in February. The schedule is now being finalized.

*Ameritech Grant Awarded To IUPUI University Library Faculty Member
The Ameritech Fellows Program recently announced the award of a grant of $14,800 to IUPUI University Library faculty member Michelle Fiander, one of five IUPUI faculty members to receive such a grant. Grants are awarded to promote innovation in teaching and learning as facilitated through the use of information technology.
Fiander, who joined the University Library faculty in 1998 as a Reference and Cataloging Librarian, stated that the grant funds will support the development of an "Interactive Virtual Reference Desk. " This virtual reference service will be a tool for promoting information literacy and will be available online within the coming year. Using Web collaboration software, the virtual desk will allow distance learners and patrons outside of University Library to receive research assistance from librarians at the University Library Reference Desk. A Virtual Reference Desk will offer live, interactive reference services over the Web, and librarians can "push" Web pages to the patron's browser, escort patrons around the Web and search databases together with patrons.
Created in 1999, the Ameritech Fellows Program established support with a total of $1,000,000 to Indiana University faculty members in their efforts to integrate information technology into campus and distance education. The Fellows Program is provided with the support of the IU Office of Distributed Education and the UITS Teaching and Learning Information Technologies.
For further information about the development of the IUPUI University Library Interactive Virtual Reference Desk, please contact Michelle Fiander at (317) 274-0487 or mfiander@iupui.edu.
