1. Staff News

Effective February 8, Christopher Harter has accepted the Assistant Circulation Supervisor position in Customer and Facilities Services. He has a background in a variety of library settings and an MLS from Indiana University.

Effective February 3, Lisa Howard resigned from her position as Assistant Circulation Supervisor in Customer and Facilities Services.

2. Marie T. Wright 1999 Recipient Of White Award

Marie T. Wright, Associate Librarian and Member of the External Relations Team at IUPUI University Libraries, has been chosen as the 1999 recipient of the Herbert S. and Virginia White Professional Development Award. Marie's award-winning project is to develop a Web-based annotated bibliography on the residual traces of Africa retained, either known or unknown, by African-Americans.

The White Award Committee was unanimous in its recommendation to Dean Thorin that Marie be selected for this award, and the Dean strongly supported the committee's advice and selected her as the successful applicant. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the project, it has the potential for facilitating many different kinds of research. It has the possibility of becoming an important teaching tool for several Indiana University programs, and no doubt will be used by teachers and scholars at other educational institutions as well. Furthermore, since the bibliography will be a Web-based product, it will also serve those of the non-academic public. Hopefully, the resultant product of Marie's effort will help students, scholars, and all interested parties better recognize and appreciate a significant, but sometimes overlooked, part of our American experience.

Dean Thorin will present an award certificate to Marie on Librarians' Day in Kokomo this coming May 13. Congratulations, Marie!

---Wendell Johnting, chair of White Award Committee

7. Docent Training At Wylie House Museum

Wylie House needs volunteer docents to give guided tours of the restored 1835 home of IU's first president. If you enjoy 19th-century American history, would like to learn more about everyday life 150 years ago, and can spend two to four afternoons a month sharing what you learn, this is for you! Docent Training will be offered Saturday, February 27 from 2 to 4 pm at Wylie House Museum, 307 E. 2nd Street in Bloomington. Register by calling 855-6224 or e-mail Bill Lawrence at wlawrenc@indiana.edu.

8. Seed Sale At Wylie House

Wylie House Museum will hold its annual Spring Seed Sale on Saturday, March 6, from 10 am to 4 pm. Visitors to the Seed Sale can choose from more than 30 historic varieties of flower, herb and vegetable seeds -- all grown in the Wylie House garden using organic methods and germination-tested to ensure viability. These are varieties that were grown in America before 1850, and many are rare today. Seed packets include historical information, as well as how to grow and save seed.

A seed swap table will give local seed-savers an opportunity to exchange free seeds from their own gardens. (Seed swappers: please bring seeds that have been properly stored, labelled, and are not more than two years old.) And a resource area with information on seed-saving and heirloom gardening will prove helpful to beginning gardeners and veterans alike.

Wylie House Museum is located at 307 E. 2nd Street in Bloomington, Indiana. It is handicap accessible from the east drive. For more information, call 855-6224 or e-mail Larime Wilson at lajwilso@indiana.edu.
