OPPORTUNITIES FOR LIBRARIES & LIBRARIANS
To support librarians from any IU campus for projects and activities aimed at library development of international collections. Funds for domestic or international travel to: examine special collections, special book/media fairs with international content; collaborate institutionally on special internationally focused library projects; travel to specific world areas for print/media acquisitions; visit funding agencies to identify/coordinate support for special international library projects. One-time funding also available to enhance user access to IU's international collections and resources.
Deadline: March 15, 2000
Awards: up to $1,500.
Note: Travel to conferences is not supported under this program (for which the "Overseas Conference Fund" is available).

HEWLETT LIBRARY ACQUISITION FUNDS
This is to invite head librarians at all non-Bloomington campuses to submit applications for the 1999-2000 round of the Hewlett Library Acquisition Funds.
Deadline: April 15, 2000.
Awards: up to $2,000.

The Hewlett Library Acquisition grants are competitive awards that assist IUPUI and the other IU campuses, with one award per campus. These awards are intended to assist these libraries to purchase library materials on international studies which would be difficult or impossible to acquire in the absence of such funding.

Application consists of a letter describing the following:
- the kinds of materials needed (print vs. other)
- their areal range and subject specialization
- an estimate of their costs
- a statement addressing how they enhance current collections or develop new international areas to support the teaching and research goals of the campus. Proposals from each campus will be enhanced if the campus is able to provide matching funds for these international acquisitions.

PCIP INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES GRANTS
To support faculty and librarians from all campuses for research abroad or for projects which significantly contribute to the internationalization of their campuses. Preference given to those early in their careers who seek to enhance their international reputation in research or teaching.
Deadlines: April 1, 2000.
Awards: up to $1,500.
Note: These grants are not awarded for conference participation (see "overseas Conference Fund") nor for faculty exchange activities.

OVERSEAS CONFERENCE FUND
To provide partial support for airfare and travel expenses to an overseas conference where applicant will present a competitively selected paper or perform an important role.
Deadlines: April 1, 2000; July 1, 2000.

*Remote Access To IUB Databases

Thanks to the dedication of a talented group of individuals, most of IUB's web-accessible databases are now available for remote use by authorized users. This involved a near-Herculean effort to re-negotiate many of our licenses in order to permit off-site use as well as the technical savvy to authenticate our users. As a result, IUB now has an annotated alphabetical list of databases located off the "libfind" (http://www.indiana.edu/~libfind/) page at http://www.indiana.edu/~libfind/alphalist.html.

Here you will find beautiful new icons that specify the type of access to every database in one of four categories:
* resources that many only be used from public workstations in the IUB Libraries (these are indicated with an icon of a CD-ROM)
* resources that may only be used from IUB Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (these are indicated with the abbreviation "IUB")
* resources that can be accessed through the Internet from anywhere with a valid IUB network ID (these are indicated with a key icon above IUB)
* resources that are available to all Internet users without restriction (these are indicated with a globe)
An explanation of these categories and their icons is found off the WebPage "Alphabetical list of all databases" under "More information about accessing electronic resources" (http://www.indiana.edu/~libfind/access.html). We are still in the process of re-negotiating some licenses and as we gain permission for remote access, we expect more icons to change from "IUB" to IUB with the "key."

Information about expanded access to these resources and about our new WebPage features will be disseminated widely on the IUB campus in the coming weeks. In the meantime, I would like to thank Lou Malcomb for her perseverance and leadership of Bloomington's Electronic Resources and Services Committee (BERSERC) and the invaluable contributions of Diane Dallis, JoAnne Deeken, Emma Dederick-Colon, Dennis Gillespie, Gail McKenzie, Pam Owens, Mary Popp, Charlie Sweet, and Carolyn Walters. This would not have happened without their team effort! The IUB Libraries' staff join our many users in thanking you for making our resources more widely available.

Comments are appreciated and will be conveyed to BERSERC which provided oversight for this project and whose other members include Julie Bobay, Marion Frank-Wilson, Frank Quinn, Moira Smith, Perry Willett
