1. Staff News

Effective February 8, Yung-Rang Cheng accepted the position of East Asian Retrospective Conversion Specialist in IOCM. She worked in an hourly position in IOCM prior to accepting this position and is a doctoral student in the School of Library and Information Science.

The following title by Dolores J. Hoyt has just been published: A Strong Mind in a Strong Body: Libraries in the German-American Turner Movement. New York: Peter Lang, 1999. This work provides a case study for the role of libraries and reading in ethnic groups during a period of major immigration to the United States, 1850 to 1918. The American Turner movement was a national phenomena which continues today, but was very politically active in its earlier years, particularly in regard to promotion of anti-slavery platforms, labor laws, increased educational opportunities, and physical fitness in the educational curriculum. The American Turners have always supported a combination of physical fitness and cultural programs. The Normal School of the American Turners was located in Indianapolis and deeded over to Indiana University in the 1940s. The Normal School was the forerunner of the IUPUI School of Physical Education, and its instructors later formed the Indiana University (Bloomington) School of Physical Education. The archives of the American Turners are located in the Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives of the IUPUI University Libraries.

2. Acting Librarians Named

Acting Librarians for History and History & Philosophy of Science and for Religious Studies Named

Despite the best efforts of the Search Committee and others involved in the interview process, the national search for a Librarian for History, History & Philosophy of Science, and Religious Studies resulted in a decision not to hire a permanent replacement for this position at this time. In considering the options, we all agreed that the IU Bloomington Libraries have two outstanding librarians who could serve ably in the capacity of Acting Librarians for these departments. To this end, I am pleased to announce that Celestina Wroth, Visiting Assistant Librarian, Main Library Reference Department has agreed to serve as the Acting Librarian for History and History & Philosophy of Science, while Lorraine Olley, Head of Preservation, will take the lead for Religious Studies. Both appointments are effective February 15, 1999 and will extend until the completion of a subsequent national search to be initiated in about a year. Celestina will become a full-time member of SALC and will occupy Nancy Cridland's former office in the Research Collections (East tower stacks), E560(cewroth@indiana.edu; 855-1336). Lorraine is already a regular SALC adjunct and will fulfill her duties as bibliographer from her current location in the Preservation Department, Main Library, E050 on the ground floor (olley@indiana.edu; 855-6281). On behalf of the Search Committee, the Library Management Team, and the Chairs of the various academic departments, I would like to thank both Celestina and Lorraine for agreeing to take on these important responsibilities.

Celestina Wroth received a Master of Library Science and a Master of Arts in History from Indiana University in 1996. Her area of concentration in History was Medieval Europe. She worked in the rare book trade throughout high school and college. In graduate school, she worked at several libraries on campus, including the Lilly Library. She joined the Reference Department in 1994; since 1997 she has been a Visiting Assistant Librarian. In the Reference Department, she has assisted faculty and graduate students individually and also participated in planning and teaching instructional sessions. Celestina is proficient in Spanish and has reading knowledge of Latin, German, French and Italian in addition to bibliographic knowledge of Portuguese and Dutch.

Lorraine Olley has been the head of the Preservation Department since 1988. Before that, she worked in the libraries of Dartmouth College, Columbia University and New York University, with responsibilities including collection development for religion and philosophy. She holds a BA in philosophy from Rosary College (now Dominican University), a Master of Arts in Divinity and a Master of Arts in Library Science from the University of Chicago. Lorraine is proficient in French and has reading knowledge of German and Italian.

Please join SALC in welcoming them to their new roles and responsibilities.

4. Copyright Program

Websites, Electronic Reserves, and Other Teaching Technologies:

Delivering Instructional Materials to Students and Surviving the Copyright Dilemma

Tuesday, February 23, 1999
1:00 - 3:00 PM
IUPUI University Library, UL 1116

Do you have a website for your class, use Oncourse at IUPUI, or place materials on electronic reserve at the University Library?

Did you know that these exciting teaching tools also give rise to complex copyright questions?

This presentation is an opportunity to develop a practical understanding of the copyright issues in order that you may be serving the needs of your students while also avoiding the pitfalls of possible infringement liability. The program will begin with a brief presentation by Professor Kenneth Crews, Director of the Indiana University Copyright Management Center, focusing on the question of fair use for electronic delivery of materials and the possibilities for securing permission from copyright owners. Much of the program will be set aside for your questions and for working together to develop a constructive and functional understanding of these issues. This program will be an opportunity for all of us to work together to develop a functional standard for fair use in the electronic environment.

In order that we may best plan the event, please let us know if you are planning to attend. Please contact the Copyright Management Center at 317-274-4400 or send us a message at copyinfo@iupui.edu. In your reply, please indicate that you plan to attend the copyright program on February 23 and give us your name and institutional affiliation. While this program is specifically for the IUPUI and IU communities, members of other academic communities are also welcome.

The program on February 23 is the first in a series of specialized sessions and discussion groups on copyright issues that the Copyright Management Center will host during 1999. Please watch for future announcements. Please also let us know which topics might be of greatest interest to you.
