LIBRARY EVENTS

*Historic Seed Sale at Wylie House

Wylie House Museum will hold its annual Spring Seed Sale on Saturday, March 4, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Visitors to the Seed Sale can choose from more than 22 historic varieties of flower, herb and vegetable seeds all grown in the Wylie House garden using organic methods and germination-tested to insure viability. These are varieties which were grown in America before 1850, and many are rare today. Seed packets include historical information, as well as how to grow and save seed.

A seed swap circle will take place at 11:00 a.m., giving local seed-savers an opportunity to exchange free seeds from their own gardens. (Seed swappers, please bring seeds that have been properly stored, labeled, and are not more than two years old.) Weather permitting, the public is invited to participate in the year's first planting in the Wylie House garden at 1:00 p.m. At 2:00 p.m., there will be a showing of the Seed Savers' Exchange slide show featuring heirloom varieties at their preservation garden, Heritage Farm, in Decorah, Iowa. In addition, to the above planned events, a resource area will be set up with information on seed-saving and heirloom gardening, which will prove helpful to beginning gardeners and veterans alike.

Wylie House Museum is located at 307 E. 2nd Street in Bloomington, Indiana. It is handicap accessible from the east drive. For more information, call 812-855-6224.

In his letter of congratulations, Myles Brand wrote Gary: "It is faculty members like yourself, who have a clear vision of what education can and should be, who have raised Indiana University to its current prominence as a great teaching and a great research instittuion. Although we have all shared in the fruits of your achievements, it is you who deserve the reward." Gary will be honored at a lunch and then during a ceremony on Founder's Day, Sunday, March 5th.

You can learn more about the W. George Pinnell Award at the Web site: http://www.indiana.edu/~ufc/policies/award.html. This wonderful achievement follows closely on Gary's recognition last year as the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award of the Bloomington Faculty Council.
