Mary Russell Bucknum, curator of sound recordings, joined the Recorded Sound Section of the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division in November 1997. Prior to going to the Library of Congress, Bucknum spent thirteen years as the librarian and associate director of the Indiana University Archives of Traditional Music, a sound recording archive of non-classical music and spoken work materials. During her tenure at the archives, she was responsible for automating the catalog as part of the university's NOTIS system; was named curator of the Hoagy Carmichael Room and Collection; and wrote and received several grants for special projects. In her new position as curator of sound recordings, Bucknum is a recommending officer heavily involved in selection. She is working on several special projects, including a collection census, an initiative to encourage greater copyright compliance for sound recordings, and design of a Web interface for the Recorded Sound Section's Cuadra STAR database.

2. InULA Workshop

InULA Sponsors Workshop Developing Performance Standards for Academic Reference Librarians on April 23 at IUSB

The Indiana University Librarians Association (InULA) is sponsoring a Professional Development workshop entitled Developing Performance Standards for Academic Reference Librarians. It will be presented by Lila Fredenburg, IU Libraries' Human Resources Officer. Attendees who would gain the most from this workshop would be academic librarians whose responsibilities include a major portion of time spent in reference work. Nevertheless, skills concepts and methods for developing performance standards would also appeal to librarians in other areas such as library instruction and even technical services.

The workshop will be held at Indiana University South Bend in Northside Hall, Room 135 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. A box lunch and refreshments will be provided. This program costs $10.00 for non-InULA members and is free to InULA members. Librarians from all Indiana academic libraries are encouraged to attend. Workshop attendance is limited to 25 people. Registration deadline is April 1st. To register for the workshop, send the completed information form below and, if applicable, a check (made payable to InULA) to: Carol Rusinek, Indiana University Northwest Library, 3400 Broadway, Gary, Indiana 46408, Phone: 219-980- 6547.(Note: Do not return the completed form via e-mail.) This workshop is funded by an InULA Professional Development Grant.

3. Diversity Day

Please mark your calendars for Libraries Diversity Day which will be celebrated on March 31st from 1:30 to 2:30 pm in the Media Showing Room. This year, in addition to asking for contributions of foods from different cultures to share among ourselves, we will also feature an informal program.

Julie Knost, IU's Director of Affirmative Action, will speak to us about the meaning of diversity and how we can be a part of the University's efforts in this regard. The Dean will also address the issue of diversity within the Libraries.

Everyone is strongly encouraged to attend and find out what diversity really is. Those attending will not be charged for time off since this is considered a training session.

Please contact Betty Andis or Suzann Easter by telephone or e-mail as to attendance and/or food that you plan to bring. See you there!

4. Web Assessment/Architecture Project

The IUB Libraries have hired outside consultants to help review goals for the IUB Libraries' public Web site, lead usability tests with various user groups, and provide a plan for the architecture of the site, including categorization, labeling, navigation and maintainability. Over the next three months, Gomoll Research and Design, Inc., with assistance from Cathy Spiaggia from UITS Usability Consulting Services, will do field research and conduct usability studies on the existing web site. Argus Associates, Inc. will make recommendations on improved information architecture for the public site.

Dean Thorin has appointed a Web Assessment/Architecture Working Group to serve as primary contacts for the consultants during this review. The members of this group are:

Julie Bobay, co-chair
Yolanda Cooper-Birdine
Diane Dallis
Emma Dederick-Colon
Jian Liu
Mary Popp, co-chair
Perry Willett
Phyllis Davidson, ex-officio
Pat Steele, ex-officio

In response to requests from the consultants, the Working Group drafted a statement of goals for the web site, building on work previously done by the Web Policy Committee, as well as a list of user groups to target for usability testing. The consultants have prepared a plan for the testing phase of the project. The Libraries' Management Team has approved the goals and plans.

All IUB librarians and library staff will have opportunities to attend brainstorming sessions and provide your input, and we hope you will choose to participate. You can check the project website for background documents and updates on the project. We invite you to visit the site and send us your thoughts.

5. Electronic Resources Videoconference (IU Bloomington)

Thanks to a Professional Development Grant from InULA, the IUB Libraries will provide an introduction to the principles and problems in the licensing of electronic resources through an ARL/SLA sponsored videoconference entitled De-mystifying the Licensing of Electronic Resources. The videoconference will be held March 4 from 1 to 4p.m. in R/TV 180. Regrettably, participation had to be limited because of difficulties in locating a room large enough to accommodate all. However, part of the InULA Grant provided for funding so the videoconference can be videotaped. The videotape and conference materials will be available to anyone wishing to receive the information (contact Mary Hellmann). The videoconference will also be aired at the IUPUI campus. Registration on the Bloomington campus has now closed.

7. LAMA Institute

INSTRUCTION LIBRARIANS - PLEASE RESPOND!!!

The Bibliographic Instruction and User Education (BIUE) section of ILF and the Indiana Academic Library Association (IALA) are considering cosponsoring a LAMA Institute. This brief questionnaire will help us to assess whether or not this would be a successful venture.

Please pass this on to other instruction librarians and administrators that might be interested and return it by March 15, 1999. Thank you for your input!

About the program:

"Managing Educational Services: Teaching and Learning in Libraries" is a new regional institute available from the Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA). The one-day workshop will provide models and practical advice for academic and public librarians managing instructional programs and educational services. The institute will feature a mix of mini-lectures, small group work, case studies, and media presentations.

Betsy Wilson, Associate Director of Libraries for Public Services at the University of Washington in Seattle, created the workshop and will be presenter. Wilson has nearly twenty years experience in development, evaluating and managing educational programs in libraries, both as an instruction librarian and as a senior administrator. Wilson has a long record of scholarship and service in the profession, and is the recipient of the 1995 Miriam Dudley Bibliographic Instruction Librarian Award.
