Each year the Chi chapter of Beta Phi Mu presents a Service Award to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the library profession. The award this year is unique, as it commemorates the 50th anniversary of Beta Phi Mu and is thus called the made a "distinguished, significant, and consistent contribution to our profession." A medal will be presented to recipients from all Chapters during a formal ceremony at ALA this summer. The recipient of the Chi Chapter Golden Anniversary Award is Mary Popp, Public Services Librarian, Library Information Technology Services, Indiana University-Bloomington Libraries. Mary will not be able to receive and acknowledge the award at the Awards Breakfast on April 8th, as she will again be a speaker at the ACRL Instruction Section's Learning to Teach Preconference in Detroit. Among Mary's many leadership roles was that of serving as president of Beta Phi Mu, Chi Chapter. In addition, Mary is an innovator. She was instrumental in founding the Bibliographic Instruction/User Education Section of the Indiana Library Federation and she was a founding member of the Round Table Coordinating Committee of ALA. From her first professional position as Assistant Librarian of the original SLIS Library, Mary has filled many roles in the IU-B Libraries, including Head of Halls of Residence Libraries, Head of Undergraduate Library Services, and Head of Library Instruction. In each, she embodied the highest standard of librarianship, combining an uncompromising service ethic, a constant striving for innovation and improvement, and deep concern for her colleagues and those under her supervision. Thus, it is fitting that we honor her years of continued excellence and commitment to the attainment of the highest ideals of the library profession with the Golden Anniversary Award. Congratulations Mary!

From the Faculty & Staff Development Committee: a special thanks to Phil Bantin of University Archives for hosting two very interesting and informative Archives tours in February.
Colleen Talty and the Media student staff have been doing library displays
for years on media resources for various monthly events. These events
include Latino Heritage Month (September 15-October) and Black History
Month, which is about to end. We've decided to extend access to the
display information by creating companion web pages that will persist
after the month has ended. Tracey Elmer, Computer Coordinator, has
finished the first one to "Celebrate Black History Month"

Please mark your calendars for Libraries Diversity Day which will be celebrated on March 31st from 1:30 to 2:30 pm in the Media Showing Room. This year, in addition to asking for contributions of foods from different cultures to share among ourselves, we will also feature an informal program.
Julie Knost, IU's Director of Affirmative Action, will speak to us about the meaning of diversity and how we can be a part of the University's efforts in this regard. The Dean will also address the issue of diversity within the Libraries.
Everyone is strongly encouraged to attend and find out what diversity really is. Those attending will not be charged for time off since this is considered a training session.
Please contact Betty Andis or Suzann Easter by telephone or e-mail as to attendance and/or food that you plan to bring. See you there!
You're Invited To The 13th Annual HPER Library Auction
The 13th annual HPER Library auction is scheduled for Thursday, April 1, 1999 from 11:30am - 1:00pm in Room 125 (HPER Faculty Lounge). Please make a note on your calendar and plan to join us in the festivities. Now would be a good time to check for items no longer needed or used. Let us help you find a new home for them. Donations in the past have ranged from home cooked gourmet meals to hand made bluebird houses to airplane rides to used barbecue grills. Use your imagination and donate to a worthy cause. Funds raised from past auctions have been used to purchase needed computers, books, and other equipment for the HPER Library.
Please plan to donate and attend this exciting event. There will be a
special category of auction items for "students only" so encourage
students to attend as well. Contact Erla Heyns (HEYNSE) at 5-4398
or Ada Pennington (PENNINGT) at
5-9314 to make donations or for information.

"The Sukumar Sen Manuscript Collection: Issues in Preservation"
Indiana University Bloomington's INDIA STUDIES PROGRAM and the INDIANA NETWORK FOR DEVELOPMENT OF INDIA AWARENESS (INDIA) are pleased to present a lecture by Dr. Rebecca J. Manring, IU India Studies Program, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 11, Wylie Hall, Room 005, on the Bloomington campus.
In the framework of her work with a manuscript collection which is the first manuscript project to be filmed by the Center for Research Libraries South Asia Microform Project (SAMP), Dr. Manring will talk about Bengali literature, as distinct from Brahmanical, Sanskrit literature. She will describe the Sen collection, and explain the importance of preserving it in toto: because it serves as an index of the Bengali intellectual community's self-definition.
Dr. Manring will also describe some of the problems scholars working in India encounter.
