Dear Colleagues,
Dottie has completed a difficult 6 week regimen of chemotherapy and radiation which was designed to shrink her pancreatic cancer tumor after an operation on Dec. 14, 2000 which resolved her major symptoms but was not successful in removing the tumor. New CAT-scans last Friday show that the tumor has not shrunk much but that it also has not grown or spread beyond the local area. Most importantly it appears to have pulled back from the portal vein, around which the tumor was wrapped and which prevented removal of the tumor without danger of major bleeding. The surgeon at IU Medical now feels he can safely remove that vein and replace it with one from the leg. Therefore, he has scheduled a full "Whipple" operation for Wednesday March 28. This should give Dottie time to recover from the radiation and chemotherapy, which she has survived well but which has weakened her. Our two daughters (and two granddaughters), plus two of Dottie's sisters are coming in the meantime during Spring break and after to help out and keep her cheered up.
We want to thank all of you for your concern and tremendous support during the past several difficult months. We like to think that this support, and that of our family and friends, has made the difference in keeping us optimistic and able to fight this disease. We remain realistic about the dismal long term statistics for this type of cancer but also remain confident that the operation will be a complete success this time and the cancer completely removed. In the meantime, our faith in the ability of people to care for each other and thus in the future of our profession and our society has been greatly strengthened by the support and love we've received from those around us. Our deepest thanks for that.
