The Indiana University Libraries are leading a 3-year CIC project to digitize almost 3,000 works of 19th century American fiction. The works are part of a bibliography compiled by Lyle Wright, *American Fiction 1851-1875* (San Marino, CA: Huntington Library, 1957). The project, which has been endorsed by the library directors of the 9 participating CIC libraries, includes librarians and staff from many departments, including collection development, preservation, technical services and digital libraries.
IU Bloomington librarians and staff will make major contributions to the
project. Martha Brogan and Kris Brancolini will serve on the steering
committee, and Perry Willett will be the coordinator.
This cooperative project will digitize approximately 800,000
pages from the microfilm set published by Primary Source Media. LETRS
staff will convert the page images to text files using Optical
Character Recognition (OCR) software and create a searchable database
of the texts. Starting in the summer, Perry will lead a workshop to
train staff from the participating institutions in editing and encoding
the texts, and the hard work of proofreading and editing will begin. For
