4. Review Of The Preservation Program
In January 1999, the Libraries invited Paul Conway, head of the preservation department at Yale University LIbrary, to review the preservation program on the Bloomington campus. His report recommends action in five priority areas:
Collection Management: Establish the Auxiliary Library Facility as the centerpiece of the collection management strategy for all research collections on the Bloomington Library campus. Using the ALF as a collection management tool will do more for preservation at the IU Libraries than any other initiative.
Collections Care and Conservation Treatment: Establish better coordination between the conservation units in the Main and Lilly Libraries, by increasing the amount of routine care given to the circulating collections in the Main Library while deferring to the Lilly Library treatment for rare and medium-rare materials in both collections.
Binding: Review policies and tighten control on expenditures for commercial library binding.
Preservation Replacement: Develop the Preservation Department's digital imaging capabilibity as a production center for reformatting brittle books.
Preservation Microfilm: Increase the Libraries' commitment to preservation microfilming, by establishing both a modest demand-driven program to meet local needs, and by pursuing grants for collection-based microfilming projects.
An Implementation Steering Committee will be charged with reviewing Conway's report and implementing its recommendations. Membership will be announced shortly; interested participants may contact Martha Brogan (mbrogan@indiana.edu).
Next week the complete report will be distributed on the Bloomington campus to the Library Management Team, the Senior Management Group, all collection managers, members of the Preservation Committee, and members of the Implementation Steering Committee. If you are not among those listed and would like a copy, please contact one of these staff members or e-mail Mary Hellmann (hellmann@exchange.indiana.edu) after March 22d.
5. Diversity Day At IU Bloomington
Please mark your calendars for Libraries Diversity Day which will be celebrated on March 31st from 1:30 to 2:30 pm in the Media Showing Room. This year, in addition to asking for contributions of foods from different cultures to share among ourselves, we will also feature an informal program.
Julie Knost, IU's Director of Affirmative Action, will speak to us about the meaning of diversity and how we can be a part of the University's efforts in this regard. The Dean will also address the issue of diversity within the Libraries.
Everyone is strongly encouraged to attend and find out what diversity really is. Those attending will not be charged for time off since this is considered a training session.
Please contact Betty Andis (bandis@indiana.edu) or Suzann Easter (sleaster@indiana.edu) by telephone or e-mail as to attendance and/or food that you plan to bring by March 25, 1999.

Presentation-Chasing the Public Domain
Date-25 March 1999
Are you certain that the "c in the circle" symbol invariably means that the work is protected by copyright law?
Do you believe that copyright covers the whole work and everything in it?
Do you find the intricacies and restrictions of copyright law pushing you to stiffer and stiffer beverages?
If you answered yes...
Join the Copyright Management Center on 25 March 1999 in University Library 1116 at 1:30 p.m. for a wide-ranging discussion about the Public Domain. This discussion will help you avoid some of the more complex issues and potential liabilities associated with using copyrighted works by showing you how to seek out and identify works that are not protected by copyright at all. You will learn to ask whether a specific work is, or indeed can be, protected by copyright. You will explore how works originally copyrighted can subsequently lose that protection and discover what types of works simply can never be copyrighted. We also will explain when and how works reach the end-of-the-copyright-line and enter the public domain. Dwayne K. Buttler, Senior Copyright Analyst at the Copyright Management Center, will lead the discussion, but your questions about the public domain and other copyright twists will provide the foundation for learning and be most welcome.
