*InULA Scholarship 2002 AwardedGreetings, I am pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2002 InULA Scholarship is Jennifer Conn Segner. Jennifer is close to finishing both the MLS/MIS degrees with an outstanding academic record. She has also completed the requirements of the Indiana State Teaching License in Library/School Media. Her conception of the role of the librarian is broad and comprehensive. Her reference notes that Jennifer "will bring to the public schools energy and creativity to promote information skills." Furthermore, "she is aware of the current educational standards, methods to effectively teach information selection and use, and has shown that she can collaborate with other teachers to provide instruction in support of literacy programming." Congratulations to Jennifer!
I do want to observe that all of applications we received this year were outstanding. The InULA Executive Board deliberated at great length to determine the awardee. All of the applicants demonstrated excellent academic records. We are confident that all of them will become outstanding librarians and we thank them for applying to the InULA scholarship.

*InULA Research Incentive Funds Awarded
I am pleased to announce that the InULA Board has awarded Research Incentive Funds to Ellen Bosman (IU Northwest) and Xiao Jason Yu (IU Bloomington). Ellen's project, A Study of Church Libraries in Australia, intends to examine various characteristics of Australian Church libraries in comparison to U.S. church libraries. Xiao will be undertaking a pilot study for a larger project that "seeks to establish a multidisciplinary forum on numeric data collections and services and a cutting-edge infrastructure to provide access to numeric data resources for Indiana University researchers."
The next deadline for applications to the InULA Research Incentive Fund is May 30, 2002. Guidelines for the fund and an application form can be found at: http://www.indiana.edu/~iuula/rifguide.html

*Great News From the IU FoundationIU TOP PUBLIC UNIVERSITY IN THE NATION IN TOTAL VOLUNTARY SUPPORT
IU rocketed to the top of the charts in fiscal 2001, becoming the top public university in the nation in Total Voluntary Support. Total Voluntary Support includes gifts from alumni, corporations, foundations and other friends, and research grants and contracts from the private sector. In fiscal 2001, IU received $302 million from these two sources.
In the past few years, IU has ranked 6th or 7th among all public universities in the country. Contributing to IU's leap to the top are the $105 million gift from the Lilly Endowment, the success of the $700 million campaign for IUPUI, and the Bloomington campaign that raised $504 million before it ended in December 2000.
The full story appeared in the April 5 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education. More good news...
IU ENDOWMENT GROWS IN A TIME OF DECLINE
According to an annual survey sponsored by the National Association of College and University Business Officers, two of every three college endowments declined in value in the 2001 fiscal year. The average endowment lost 3.6% of its value due to the decline in market value of stocks and the recession. During the same time period, the S&P 500 went down 14.8%. But IU's endowment increased in market value by 1.7%.
How did we do it? The investment department, the outside managers they engage, and the IUF Board of Directors Investment Committee plan for the inevitable ups and downs of the business cycle by diversifying and balancing our portfolio, our investment strategies, and our outside managers to protect the endowment, as much as possible, from volatility. At the same time that the Investments staff was working to protect gifts we already had, Foundation and IU development staff were having extraordinary success in raising new gifts, including gifts for endowment. At a time when other endowments in our size category ($500 million to $1 billion) posted an average return of negative 5.2%, their combined efforts resulted in an increase in the value of our endowment!
