THANK YOU

Thank you, Friends!

My most sincere thanks to all the IUL colleagues who contributed to and attended my retirement celebration on March 31. It was a great party, the flowers are lovely, and I will cherish the cranberry glass bowl always. It is a beautiful memento of a wonderful time in my life. Special thanks to Bob Goehlert, who put so much effort into helping the SLIS student organizers of the party, and whose support I appreciate SO much.

Thanks to so many of you for 16 great years--in UGL, GPD, and even when I was the "odd duck" buried away down in SLIS. I have always been, and will continue to be, very proud of being an IU librarian and a colleague of the very best! I look forward to seeing you lots in future, because, like the bad penny, I expect to keep turning up.

My very best to you all,
Mary Krutulis

LIBRARY NEWS

*IUPUI University Library Anniversary Exhibit

In April, 1975 IUPUI Chancellor Dr. Glenn Irwin created the University Archives at the IUPUI University Library to serve as the repository for important historical documents relating to the campus at Indianapolis. To celebrate and commemorate the silver anniversary, the archives staff of the Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives of the University Library has installed an exhibit entitled, University Library Special Collections and Archives: Preserving History for 25 Years, on display in the Level One Lobby. The exhibit highlights items from the primary collection areas: university archives, philanthropic collections, German-Americana collections, general collections, and rare books. The exhibit will be open to the public during regular library hours through April 28.

The University Library archives has seen many changes over the years, and one of the most important developments has been the increasing number of patrons using the archives's collections. Last month the archives had the busiest month in its 25-year history, recording 147 patron contacts, of which 107 were in-person contacts. Patrons spent a total of 165 hours and 40 minutes of research time in the archives.

A comparison of the March 2000 figures with those from earlier years illustrates the growth in patron numbers:

* March, 1995: 49 patron contacts (39 in-person), 22 hours and 35 minutes of patron research time.
* March, 1996: 46 patron contacts (36 in-person), 17 hours and 15 minutes of patron research time.
* March, 1997: 53 patron contacts (39 in-person), 65 hours of patron research time.
* March, 1998: 66 patron contacts (55 in-person), 100 hours and 30 minutes of patron research time.
* March, 1999: 70 patron contacts (57 in-person), 119 hours and 30 minutes of patron research time.

Thus three times as many patrons used the archives in March, 2000 as in March, 1995, and the number of in-person contacts almost tripled as well. One factor in this growth has been the increasing number of patrons from outside of Marion County who draw upon the resources available in Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives. In March, 1995 none of the patron contacts were from individuals outside of the IUPUI community or Marion County, and for the FY 1994/95, only 25 patron contacts were from Indiana outside of Marioin County, the United States or other countries. In March, 2000 35 patron contacts were from people outside of Marion County (more than in the entire FY 1994/95), and 156 patron contacts for the first nine months of FY1999/00 had come from outside of Marion County.
