*Jenkins Award

This years William Evans Jenkins Librarian Award has been given to Lois Heiser, Head Emerita of the Geology Library at Indiana University-Bloomington. The Jenkins Award, named after a former chief librarian at Indiana University, is made in recognition of truly outstanding contributions to the Indiana University Libraries or to the library profession in general by a present or former librarian at IU-Bloomington. The award will be presented to Heiser at a meeting of the Bloomington Library Faculty on April 29th, and she will also be recognized at the IU Libraries Retirement and Recognition Reception on May 3rd.

Heiser received her undergraduate degree in German language and literature and masters degree in library science from Indiana University. She served the IU Libraries for 40 years as student worker, support staff member, then librarian before her retirement in 2001. She is being recognized for her contribution to both Indiana University and the library profession. She played a significant role in achieving academic status for librarians and in the founding of the Indiana University Librarians Association, of which she served as the first president. As the Head of the Geology Library from 1979 to 2001, she provided strong leadership for the Libraries in the adoption of technology, from online catalogs to databases, CD-ROMs, Web sites, and digitized historical materials. Elizabeth Hanson, who was the acting Head after Lois, adds that providing excellent reference service was extremely important to her; users came first with her, and they knew it. Heiser served for eleven years on the Bloomington Faculty Council and its various committees, thirteen years on the Bloomington Library Faculty Council, and seven years on the Indiana University Library Faculty Council. Beyond Indiana University, she held the highest offices in the Geoscience Information Society and the American Federation of Teachers.

Heiser has also been much appreciated by her colleagues for her personal qualities: generosity, integrity, and unstinting support for others. Gary Wiggins, Coordinator of the Science Libraries, notes: Loiss insightful comments on various issues, coupled with her keen sense of humor, were often just the thing that was needed to resolve conflicting points of view. Julie Bobay, Walden Librarian, says that Lois served many roles for her as she developed her own career: wise advisor, trusted colleague, source of support, and a source of guaranteed laughter, often when it was most needed. Bobay adds: Like Mr. Jenkins, Lois remained true to her ideals of librarianship over several decades, never wavering from her commitment to excellence.
