Distance learning often involves the digitizing, duplication, transmission, and downloading of copyright protected materials. Current copyright law allows limited uses of materials in distance learning. The United States Copyright Office is currently preparing a report to Congress with possible recommendations for revision of that law.

The report is due on April 28, 1999. This session on Tuesday, May 11 will be an opportunity to participate in a discussion led by Prof. Kenneth Crews about the report and its implications for distance education at IUPUI, Indiana University, and throughout the country.

For a summary and explanation of the current law, prepared by Prof. Kenneth Crews, see http://www.ind.net/distance_ed/ipse/fdhandbook/copyrt.html.

For details about the upcoming study from the Copyright Office, see http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright/disted/.

Seating at this program is limited. We charge no admission fee, but please make a reservation by contacting the Copyright Management Center at (317) 274-4400 or send us a message at copyinfo@iupui.edu. In your reply, please indicate that you plan to attend the copyright program on May 11 and give us your name and institutional affiliation. While this program is specifically for the IUPUI and IU communities, members of other academic communities are especially welcome.
