David Carr will be speaking on Wednesday, May 24th, 7:30 p.m., Schurz Library 5th floor atrium. Reception follows.
"Setting Minds on Fire: Libraries, Museums and Other Incendiary Cultural Institutions"
Great cultural institutions feed flames that illuminate the human capacity to imagine possibilities. We might examine the power of these institutions by asking how often sparks fly, lanterns burn, or votive candles are dedicated, based on what happens within them. What situations for learning and discovery in libraries and museums best fulfill this metaphor? How does an incendiary cultural institution think of itself?
David Carr is an Associate Professor in the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and is a scholar, educator and consultant on the topic of learning outside the school environment, especially in cultural institutions such as libraries and museums. He strives to expand our understanding of how information is transmitted and meanings are constructed in these settings, and teaches to inspire practices that assist reflection.
Dr. Carr has served as a consultant at many institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, the American Museum of Natural History and the Art Institute of Chicago.
