*Find Information Page, IUB

The IUB Libraries have made a transition from the "Locate Fulltext Electronic Journal and Newspaper Titles" tool developed and maintained by Jian Liu to the new "Find Information" page maintained by the Libraries Web Team. This new page is based on data supplied by the Libraries Web Editorial Board along with a customized list of electronic resources provided by the subscription tracking company, Serials Solutions.

Following in the footsteps of Jian has turned out to be quite a challenge for the Web Team as they developed the new "Find Information" page. This period of transition received close scrutiny not only by our internal and external users but also by a Review Team chaired by Roger Beckman and assisted by team members Ann Bristow, Jian Liu, Jo McClamroch, Mary Popp, Carolyn Walters, and Julie Bobay. This team was charged with working with the Editorial Board to determine how best to describe ejournals and other full-text resources to which we subscribe and to work with Serials Solutions to produce the most comprehensive and up-to-date list of IUB-accessible electronic resources as possible. The Review Team has now completed its work and has endorsed the transition from the "Locate Fulltext Electronic Journal and Newspaper Titles" to the "Find Information" page.

As of the end of May, the "Locate Fulltext Electronic Journal and Newspaper Titles" page is no longer available. For those who have bookmarked this site directly, there is an explanatory page redirecting users to the "Find Information" pages, along with instructions on how to search.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jian Liu for his outstanding service to the IUB Libraries in creating and maintaining the original website providing access to title and holding information for our electronic resources. Jian initiated this service with support and encouragement from the Reference Department, a small amount of funds from the Walden Endowment, and a large amount of hard work, intelligence, and creativity on his own part.

Jian began compiling the electronic resources in February 1999. He used free, open-source software written in PERL, called Links, at http://www.gossamer-threads.com/scripts/links/index.htm. The service was installed and ran from a SUN Ultra1 machine under the desk in his office.

Due to heavy use, Jian upgraded the software in December 1999 to the commercial version called Links SQL, which increased the searching speed dramatically. The price of the software was $350, an amount happily paid by Julie Bobay, the Walden Librarian at that time, from her Walden Endowment fund.

In July 2000, the machine in Jian's office "began to act up." The front-end PERL component was moved to UITS and installed in the University's central web server, and the back-end MYSQL component was moved to LIT and installed on a more powerful dedicated server.

Again in December 2001, Jian upgraded the software with financial support from Walden funds. This migration added the browse function, thus making common, one-word titles easy to find and allowing for alphabetical browsing of titles. At this time, LIBERA began to feed individual titles to the database even while Jian's oversight and individual involvement continued.

In September 2002, after an unexpected crash of the LIT server, the back-end MYSQL component was migrated to UITS and installed on dedicated database server. Jian restored data from the backup and brought up the service quickly.

The number of titles included in the database reached 30,000 in September 2002, and monthly search logs recorded a high of 22,000 searches in November 2002.

The IUB Libraries have benefited greatly from Jian's project, both as it progressed and as it helped shape our future.

Thank you, Jian, for your excellent work and your dedication to the Libraries and to the students and faculty we serve!
