STAFF NEWS:

*Effective June 22, Rusty Wickell has accepted the Digital Library System Administrator position with the Digital Library Program at IU Bloomington. Currently he is Head of the MIS department for Jim Karl and Associates. He has a Bachelor's in Oboe Performance from Louisiana State University and a MM in Oboe Performance with a minor in Electronic Music from IU.

*At the 90th Annual Conference of the Special Libraries Association, Steven Sowell, Head, Education Library, IUB, was elected Secretary/Treasurer of the Education Division for 1999-2001.

*Robert Hinton, IUPUI University Library, has been appointed to the Spectrum Initiative Scholarship Jury for the American Library Association. The Spectrum Initiative Mission is to improve service at the local level through the development of a representative workforce that reflects the communities served by all libraries in the new millenium. The Scholarship Jury implements the evaluation and selection process of the Spectrum Initiative scholars by selecting 50 awardees by April 1 annually; fine-tunes the selection criteria; and evaluates the overall selection process and instruments annually. The ALA's Spectrum initiative is a major effort to increase significantly the number of librarians of color in the profession. The major thrust is to attract students of color to graduate programs in library and information studies. Fifty annual scholarships of $5,000 are given as part of this initiative. Congratulations to Bob for this honor.

*Julie Bobay, Head of the SLIS Library (IU Bloomington), is serving as President of the American Association of University Professors, IUB Chapter. Julie is only the second Library Faculty member to serve in this capacity. Ann Bristow was the first in 1994/95. Julie has been a member of the AAUP-Bloomington chapter Executive Board for 4 years, serving last year as Vice-President/President Elect.

The AAUP seeks to strengthen faculty governance, provide fair procedures for resolving grievances, promote the economic well-being of the faculty, and advance the interests of higher education. The Bloomington chapter of the AAUP, as the local voice of the national faculty organization, seeks to fill its mandate to protect academic freedom and promote faculty governance by assisting colleagues who claim that their rights have been violated (whether or not they are members of AAUP), organizing public discussions and forums, and working with AAUP chapters at other insitutions. It is an important voice in institutional deliberations of academic freedom and faculty governance matters at IU.

LIBRARY NEWS:

*Web of Science Database, IU Bloomington

The Indiana University Bloomington Libraries are pleased to announce access to the Institute for Scientific Information's (ISI) "Web of Science" database. This service is available to users affiliated with the IU Bloomington Libraries, IUPUI University Library and the Ruth Lilly Medical Library through a consortial agreement within the Committee on Institutional Cooperation. We have signed a license for ten simultaneous users. Users should log-out of the database when they are finished so that others may log in; users will be automatically disconnected after 20 minutes of non-use.

The Web of Science is the Web interface providing access to the Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index from 1987 to the present. Customized search options allow researchers to search one or multiple citation databases, to select a specific time period for searching, and to limit retrieval by language and/or document type. Each record in the citation databases offers access to full-length author abstracts (when available) and the author's bibliography (cited references).

On the Bloomington campus, the Web of Science is accessible via authorized IP addresses from the IU Bloomington Libraries database page, located on the web at http://www.indiana.edu/~libfind/ or directly by linking to http://www.webofscience.com

"Web of Science" replaces the compact disk versions of the Science Citation Index, previously only available for in-library use. The IUB Libraries have retained the CD versions of the Social Sciences Citation Index and the Arts & Humanities Citation Index which contain years prior to 1987. These are available for in-library use only. Otherwise, we encourage your use of Web of Science to access all three sections of these citation indexes from 1987 to the present.
