STAFF NEWS:

*Effective June 18 Cathy Jones resigned from her position with the Chemistry Library at IU Bloomington.

*Charlotte Hess has completed _A Comprehensive Bibliography of Common Pool Resources._ This is a searchable and browsable bibliography of 22,500 citations on CD-Rom. The software is included on the CD. The bibliography covers the multidisicplinary empirical research on shared natural or man-made resources, such as fisheries, forests, wildlife, irrigation systems, urban spaces, the Internet, and so forth. It also includes extensive references to theoretical works on property rights, institutional design, and game theory.
The CD-Rom was published by the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis, Bloomington, in June 1999. It will be updated on a yearly basis.
Hess also presented "Information, Knowledge, and Common Pool Resources" at 1999 Symposium of the International Association for the Study of Common Property, June 8, 1999 in Bloomington.

*On June 22, Gary Wiggins and Charles Davis presented a lecture on "Education of Chemistry Librarians and Chemical Information Specialists in the Age of Informatics" at the 31st Central Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Columbus, Ohio. The session was held at Chemical Abstracts Service, where Dr. Davis, former Dean of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois, began his information career in 1962.

LIBRARY EVENTS:

*Walden University Summer Session at IU Bloomington

Beginning on Sunday June 27 over 500 Walden University students will arrive on the Bloomington campus. They will be housed in Teter Quad where the Walden Library Liaison office will operate a complete computer cluster and service point for them. Rita Barsun and Jay Wilkerson have student staff hired and ready to go to work. This is a busy time for the office staff and for many library units that provide special services for the Walden clientele while they are on the Bloomington campus.

The IU Libraries have had a special relationship with Walden University since 1992 when Walden first contracted for summer classes space from IU. Since then the library component has grown to support a year round operation headed by Rita Barsun. It also now includes a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the presidents of both universities outlining a commitment to a variety of joint ventures. In the Libraries, Walden also supports an endowed chair held by Julie Bobay.

The average age of Walden University students is 45. The university is based in Minneapolis and Bonita Springs, Florida. It has no central campus so is very much part of the emerging non-traditional, distributed education model. With North Central accreditation and a variety of innovative programs, Walden University is a solid partner for the IU Libraries.

We all will notice these earnest adults from all over the country when they begin arriving on the 27th and stay with us through July 17. They have much research to do in a short period of time and we are prepared to help them.

*IUPUI University Library Celebrates Local Heritage

1999 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of the German poet, novelist, and dramatist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, one of the most important cultural figures in European history. Festivities in Germany and in the United States will mark "Goethe-Year 1999" and celebrate the literature, music, and art of Germany.

The Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives of the IUPUI University Library provides a local perspective through the cultural activities of the Indianapolis German-American community in its new exhibit "Love of Life: German-American Culture in Indianapolis." The exhibit uses photographs, books, and publications to highlight musical societies like the Musikverein and the Indianapolis Maennerchor (the nation's oldest continuously active singing society), German-American theatre groups, art, special events such as Oktoberfest, and German-American writers like Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Included in the exhibit is a program from the 1899 celebration of Goethe's 150th birthday staged by the German-American organizations of Indianapolis.

The exhibit is on display until the end of September in the Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives, located in Room 0133 on the Lower Level of the IUPUI University Library. Hours are 8 AM-5 PM Monday, Thursday and Friday, 8 AM-8 PM Tuesday and Wednesday, and 8 AM-noon on Saturday. For further information, please call (317)274-0464.
