LIBRARY NEWS

*Walden University Update

The annual summer visit of Walden University faculty and students at IU Bloomington will commence on July 9 and end July 29. Four hundred plus students will come for either two or three week sessions and will be housed in Willlie South. The Walden library site also will be in Willkie and will have 15 computer stations. As usual the Walden students will use many of our facilities and enjoy the excellent services and collections that mark the IUB Libraries. Please contact Rita Barsun or Jay Wilkerson if you have any questions about the summer program.

*SciFinder Scholar

Effective July 1, SciFinder Scholar, the software that provides easy searching of all of the Chemical Abstracts Service databases, is accessible on all campuses of Indiana University 24 hours/day (except for system downtime on Saturday evening/night). This was made possible by a cooperative acquisitions agreement among all of the IU campuses. I especially want to thank Bob Moran for his leadership of the regional campus libraries in this matter.

Unlike Web databases, SciFinder Scholar is client/server software. Each PC or Macintosh on which the databases are to be searched must have the client software loaded on it. To facilitate that, every authorized IU user may obtain a self-extracting copy of the software from:

http://www.indiana.edu/~libchem/findchem.html#downloads

Please read the STN User Agreement before downloading the SciFinder Scholar software:

http://www.indiana.edu/~libchem/protected/sf_user_agreement.html

The software is already available on all of the Web OPACs in Bloomington and possibly on other campuses, as well. Choose SciFinder Scholar from the list of all available databases or from the Sciences and Medicine list when using an IUB Web OPAC at the libfind page:

http://www.indiana.edu/~libfind/

Contact Denis Taaffe (dtaaffe@indiana.edu or 812-855-9452) if you experience problems with the software.

DON'T FORGET TO USE THE MASTER CALENDAR!

There is a master calendar in Libraries Human Resources where we list meetings, training sessions, and events that have been widely announced. If you are scheduling a meeting, event, etc., it is essential that you add this information to the calendar and check for conflicts. Suzann Westerfield maintains this calendar. Please contact her for information or additions via e-mail: sleaster@indiana.edu or by phone: 855-5988. The master calendar is located in the Libraries Human Resources Office and on our web page at http://www.indiana.edu/~libpers/master2000.html.
