LIBRARY EVENTS
*During the recent conference of the American Library Association (ALA), Marilyn Irwin was part of a panel that presented "How Libraries Can Serve Individuals with Mental Retardation: Guidelines in Action." The presenters discussed the recently completed Guidelines for Library Services for People with Mental Retardation, developed by a subcommittee chaired by Marilyn and recently published by the ALA. At the conference, she also accepted an appointment to the Standards Committee of the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies, a division of ALA. Marilyn is the director of the Center for Disability Information and Referral (CeDIR) at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, formerly the Institute for the Study of Developmental Disabilities, IU Bloomington.
The Kinsey Institute wishes to thank IU retired librarian Nancy Cridland for her invaluable services at the Institute Library as the acting User Services Librarian for the past five months, while Liana Zhou was on sabbatical leave.
The Institute staff and the collection users benefited greatly from her help and guidance. Her study of the journal holdings and other collection-related research will have a positive impact on the future collection management. Thank you, Nancy, for making the past five months such a rich and rewarding experience for all of us. We will continue to count on Nancy's contribution as she continues her volunteering work in making the Institute's archive more accessible.

*Library Appreciation Night in Bloomington
On July 23, Borders Books & Music will present a Library Appreciation Night from 7 to 10 pm. Borders would like to thank and reward local library employees by hosting this special night of fun and discounts.
Some of the exciting events that will be taking place include performances by Tom Roznowski, a WFIU on-air storyteller, and by Bill Bailey of "Ideophones" fame, with stories and music for kids. There will also be a raffle and a Sh-h-h-ing contest. In addition to the entertainment, Borders will be providing food and a 20% discount on all personal purchases (excluding NET books, periodicals, newspapers, food and drink from the cafe) made by employees and their families. Employees need to bring a paycheck or paystub for indentification to receive the discount.
*IUPUI University Library Celebrates Local Heritage
1999 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of the German poet, novelist, and dramatist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, one of the most important cultural figures in European history. Festivities in Germany and in the United States will mark "Goethe-Year 1999" and celebrate the literature, music, and art of Germany.
The Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives of the IUPUI University Library provides a local perspective through the cultural activities of the Indianapolis German-American community in its new exhibit "Love of Life: German-American Culture in Indianapolis." The exhibit uses photographs, books, and publications to highlight musical societies like the Musikverein and the Indianapolis Maennerchor (the nation's oldest continuously active singing society), German-American theatre groups, art, special events such as Oktoberfest, and German-American writers like Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Included in the exhibit is a program from the 1899 celebration of Goethe's 150th birthday staged by the German-American organizations of Indianapolis.
The exhibit is on display until the end of September in the Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives, located in Room 0133 on the Lower Level of the IUPUI University Library. Hours are 8 AM-5 PM Monday, Thursday and Friday, 8 AM-8 PM Tuesday and Wednesday, and 8 AM-noon on Saturday. For further information, please call (317)274-0464.
