Dean Thorin has announced the appointment of Jo Burgess as director of the Wylie House Museum, IU Bloomington.

For the past 10 years, Ms. Burgess has been head of conservation services at the Indiana University Libraries and a member of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works. Jo has a master's degree in library science as well as a bachelor's degree in anthropology with a concentration in museum studies.

Built in 1835, the Wylie House Museum was home to Andrew Wylie, IU's first president, his wife, and family. Wylie's cousin, Theophilus, the university's librarian for 38 years, also lived there from 1859 to 1895. Indiana University purchased the house in 1947. Its restoration began in 1960, and it has been open to the public as a museum since that time. Today the Wylie House Museum recreates life in the 1840s and includes gardens of early nineteenth-century plant varieties.

IUPUI Announces New Dean of the IUPUI University Library

David Lewis has been appointed Dean of the IUPUI University Library, announced by William Plater, IUPUI Executive Vice Chancellor and Dean of Faculties. Lewis joined the IUPUI University Library staff in 1993 as Head of Public Services, and then served as the Deputy University Librarian. For the last year, he has served as the Acting University Librarian.

University Library, located on the web at www.ulib.iupui.edu, is one of the most sophisticated university libraries in the United States with respect to electronic information systems and resources. Library patrons have access to more than 300 scholars workstations from which miles of fiber optics allow for access to the Internet, library databases, reference and research tools, a video archive, cable news and information TV and more.

"In the library world, the University Library has a reputation for innovation, " Plater said. "This is a reputation that I am confident the library will continue to build upon under the leadership of David Lewis."

Lewis will also coordinate with the law, medical and dental libraries on the IUPUI campus while working with IU Dean of Libraries Suzanne Thorin to make IUPUI's library an important partner within the IU library system.

"David is forward-thinking, evidenced perhaps most keenly by his interest in and knowledge of electronic resources," Thorin said. "His activities with library organizations such as the Coalition for Networked Information keep him abreast of technological advances and promote the stature of the University Libraries nationally."

Prior to coming to IUPUI, Lewis held library positions at SUNY Farmingdale, Hamilton College, Franklin and Marshall College, Columbia University, and the University of Connecticut. He received his BA from Carleton College and an MLS from Columbia University. He also has certificates of advanced study from the University of Chicago and Columbia University.

Lewis is on the editorial board of Information Technology and Libraries, and has published in the areas of library management, the effect of technology on libraries, and the economics of information. He was involved in the development and implementation of the INSPIRE project which provides web-based resources to the state of Indiana. Currently working with the Indianapolis Foundation Library Partners, Lewis helped develop the Marion County Internet Library.
