*Mellon Post-Doctoral Research Library Fellow in African Studies
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Patricia S. Kuntz as our second post-doctoral Mellow Research Library Fellow in African Studies, effective August 26, 1999. Dr. Kuntz, who received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1996, distinguished herself with minors in five other departments, including the fields of African Languages and Literature, African Studies, and Educational Policy Studies. After working for more than fifteen years as an outreach director of African and Middle East Studies centers in California, Florida, and Wisconsin, Dr. Kuntz brings expertise in three modern European languages (French, Portuguese and Spanish) and four modern African languages, Swahili, Twi, Yoruba and Arabic. Dr. Kuntz has actively promoted African content in the curricula and facilitated international communication as the co-founder of the "Electronic Technology Group" of the African Studies Association. She has recently completed a certificate in Distance Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition, Dr. Kuntz has a special interest in African children's literature and the preservation of Africana materials. With her strong interdisciplinary subject background, technical skills, and language expertise, Dr. Kuntz has an exceptional set of skills to bring to research librarianship. While here, Dr. Marion Frank-Wilson, Librarian for African Studies, will serve as a mentor to Patricia Kuntz.
In the coming weeks, Marion and I will be organizing Patricia's orientation and training schedule. If you are interested in pursuing the possibility of her working in your department on a rotation basis or have a potential project in mind, please let Marion or me know. In the meantime, I would like to thank the Selection Committee members, Mark Day, Marian Shaaban, Chris Gigliotti, Marion Frank-Wilson, Yolanda Cooper-Birdine, Kathryn Firmin-Sellars, and John Johnson, as well as others involved in the interview process, for the involvement.
The fellowship program is funded by a three-year grant, now in its second year, from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in support of training a successor generation of area studies specialists in research libraries. I would be happy to provide anyone with further information about the fellowship program in general, or Patricia's appointment in particular.

A heartfelt thanks to those of you who made Walden University's 1999 Summer Session at IU Bloomington the best ever. We could not have done it without your support. One of the questions in our survey of Walden students dealt with their impression of services and/or resources in the IU Libraries. Here is a sampling of their comments:
"Thanks for making my library adventure wonderful."
"Wonderful assistance at all libraries!"
"Many thankful moments!"
"All library services were great."
"Very helpful, useful, good resources (lights in stacks; not like dungeons back home)."
"All the staff was very helpful."
"Excellent library personnel."
"I love this library!"
Walden students have scattered to all 50 states and a dozen different countries with nothing but good words for the IU Libraries and high praise for the librarians and staff. Thank you for giving them such a positive library experience.
