*Edward Miner Is Next Mellon Postdoc Fellow

I am pleased to announce that Edward Miner will become the Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in African Studies, effective September 15, 2000. He will work under the mentorship of Marion Frank-Wilson at Indiana University Bloomington Libraries. Ed will be awarded his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Illinois in December. Referring to himself as a advocate for African languages, Ed has conducted extensive fieldwork in Uganda. He graduated with a M.A. in Linguistics from Ohio University in 1991 and received a B.A. with Honors from the University Of Texas. He is fluent in Kiswahili and has good command of modern standard Arabic and Luganda. Ed has also studied Lingala and various Bantu languages. In a departure from past years, the Mellon Foundation has permitted us to offer the appointment to someone who has already undertaken library science graduate coursework. Ed has completed about half of his coursework towards a M.L.S at the University of Illinois and he intends to complete his degree when the Mellon fellowship ends. For the past year, Ed has worked as a reference assistant in the Education and Social Science Library at the University of Illinois. Thanks to Jackie Byrd, Marion Frank-Wilson, John Johnson, Samuel Obeng, Andrea Singer, and Yolanda Cooper-Birdine (ex-officio) for serving on this Search & Screen Committee.

THANK YOU

I'd like to say thank you to everyone I've worked with during the past 10 years while here in the Preservation Department. While I am very excited about the challenges that lie ahead of me at the Wylie House, I will miss working with so many of you on a daily or weekly basis. One of the wonderful things about a preservation department is that it is involved with every other department within the Library; therefore, we get to meet a wide cross-section of the Library staff. You've made my job interesting and enjoyable, and I shall miss you all! -- Jo Burgess

HERRON SCHOOL OF ART TO NAME NEW LIBRARY IN HONOR OF GIFT FROM RUTH LILLY

INDIANAPOLIS - In honor of a recent $2 million gift, Herron School of Art at IUPUI announced that it will name its new library after Ruth Lilly. Lilly donated the funds to help Herron transform IUPUI's current law school into their new home. The 10,000 square-foot Ruth Lilly Library will sit on the eastside of the building with windows overlooking Military Park. "With this magnificent gift, Ruth Lilly joins the vanguard of philanthropists who are investing in Herron," said Valerie Eickmeier, Dean of Herron School of Art. "As an alumna of Herron's Saturday School program, she knows first hand Herron's importance to the cultural and artistic health of Indiana." Ruth Lilly has previously given generously to the construction of the IUPUI University Library, the Medical Research and Library Building for the IU School of Medicine, the Lilly Library of IU Bloomington and various other entities of Indiana University. "Ruth Lilly has once again demonstrated her strong commitment to libraries as a central part of the academic enterprise," said David Lewis, Dean of the IUPUI University Library. "This gift will make it possible for us to create a library that has both traditional strengths and innovative capacity -- a library that matches and supports the creative energy of Herron." Ruth Lilly is the last surviving great grandchild of Col. Eli Lilly, founder of Eli Lilly and Co. pharmaceutical corporation. Lilly is known as one of Indiana's most generous philanthropists. Her education recipients include fourteen universities and K-12 schools across the state and country.

*IU-Link Proposal

It is my pleasure to announce that the IU-Link proposal, developed by Martha Brogan, Associate Dean, IUB, and a system-wide committee, has been incorporated into Indiana University's biennial appropriation request for FY 2001-2003. The University is asking for a $3 million increase in base allocations to implement IU-Link.

IU-Link will expand the existing pool of commonly held research databases from ten to more than 60. The project, a collaboration of the Indiana University Libraries and the University Administration, will result in system-wide licenses for numerous electronic research resources, including databases, e-journals and full-text publications. IU-Link will be especially beneficial for the regional campuses, which have a smaller resource base for electronic products.

To prepare the proposal, an intensive survey of IU Libraries was conducted to identify the current database holdings on each campus. Each library was then asked to establish its highest priorities among the resulting inventory of 300 discrete databases. From these preliminary findings, a repository of 60 high-priority databases was developed whose licensing costs would be shared system-wide.

The Council of Head Librarians and the IU Library Faculty Committee have endorsed IU-Link.

A copy of the IU-Link proposal has been placed on reserve at the Main Library in Bloomington; library directors on the other campuses have received copies of the proposal. Thanks to all for your support of this important project as well as to all committee members including Diane Bever, Phyllis Davidson, Linda Fariss, David Lewis, Lou Malcomb, Gail McKenzie and Julie McGowan.
