STAFF NEWS

Many of you have heard the news that Melissa McAfee, our Head of Preservation since February 2000, will leave August 13th to become the Library Director of the New York State Historical Association in Cooperstown, New York. In her tenure here, Melissa has contributed tirelessly to many major new initiatives in the Preservation Department, including establishing a brittle books and mass deacidification program, assisting with grant-writing and fund-raising, and drafting the design for our new Preservation Lab in ALF.

While we wish Melissa all the best in her new endeavors, we welcome Jake Nadal as the Acting Head of Preservation and Visiting Assistant Librarian, effective August 14, 2001. Jake completed a BA with Honors in Music in 1998 from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. He then came to Bloomington where he enrolled in SLIS and expects to receive his MLS this December, having pursued coursework such as Library Preservation, the History of the Book, Metadata, Computer Programming for Information Management and User-Centered Database Design.

Jake began to work in the Preservation Department in September 1999, reformatting brittle books, and became the Brittle Books Coordinator a year later. With two years of experience in the Preservation Department, Jake is familiar with most of their current projects as well as trends in the field. He worked previously in the Fort Vancouver Regional Library.

I appreciate Jake's willingness to take on this major responsibility during a time of great activity and promise in the Preservation Department.

FRUSTRATIONS WITH FOOTNOTES? Manage your citations with bibliographic software.

Students, faculty and staff on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses will soon have free access to the three premier bibliographic management software packages: Endnote, Procite and Reference Manager. With these tools you will be able maintain a database of your references and citations and create bibliographies instantly. Say goodbye to index cards and manage your data more effectively with these powerful research aids.

On August 13th the software will be available to download for free through IUware Online, and it will also go on sale as a single CD at the IU Bookstores on both the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses. Cost for the CD will be $5.00.

For more information about the three applications, go to: http://www.isiresearchsoft.com. The software is being made available through a three-year site license paid for by the IU Libraries in Bloomington and Indianapolis, and UITS. If access is needed urgently prior to August 13th please contact Mark Lynch at cdware@indiana.edu
