*Program for Cooperative Cataloging
Two New I.U. Appointments to the Program for Cooperative Cataloging
Gary Charbonneau (Systems Librarian, Library Information Technology Dept.) has been appointed as Chair of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) Standing Committee on Automation (SCA) effective October 2001. This committee identifies automation issues to be resolved in order to provide a more timely availability of bibliographic and authority records in a more cost-effective manner. In addition, the SCA formulates plans to present PCC requirements to vendors and facilitates cooperation among Program participants and the bibliographic utilities.
Mechael Charbonneau (Head, Cataloging Division, IUB Technical Services Dept.) has been appointed as Member of the PCC BIBCO Operations Committee effective October 2001. This group establishes operational procedures, suggests changes to policies and practices, develops and maintains documentation, and contributes to the development of standards for monographic publications and integrating resources in all formats.
The Program for Cooperative Cataloging is an international cooperative effort aimed at expanding access to library collections by providing reliable, timely, and cost-effective cataloging that meets the agreed upon standards of libraries around the world. Indiana University is an active participant in all four of the PCC programs: Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO), Subject Authority Cooperative Program (SACO), Monographic Bibliographic Record Cooperative Program (BIBCO) and the Cooperative Online Serials Program (CONSER). By participating in these various programs, Indiana University benefits from the increased availability of shared bibliographic and authority records that enables us to perform cataloging in a more cost-effective manner.
Congratulations to both Gary and Mechael on these significant and important appointments. Through their service on these committees they will be positioned to influence the objectives, policies, and standards on the largest cooperative cataloging operations in the world. Likewise, they will share knowledge and expertise gained through this external service with colleagues at IU, thereby enhancing our local practices and efficiencies.
