*Elizabeth Larson participates in Law School's Faculty Exchange Program

Through the Law School's faculty exchange program with the Adilet Higher Law School, I was able to spend the month of May working in Almaty, Kazakhstan. This exchange is funded by a Soros Foundation grant and is administered by Professor Joseph Hoffmann of IU's School of Law.

Kazakhstan, located in Central Asia and rich in oil and gas, was part of the Soviet Union but is now an independent nation. While Kazakh is now the official language there, Russian is still the lingua franca (for now--this is expected to change over the next decade). I majored in Russian Studies at UCLA and took a Russian language course here at IU this past Spring to refresh my memory, so I was able to converse with the locals, find my way around the city, and work in Adilet's law library. Thanks to Adilet's sister-school programs with law schools at IU, the University of Westminster (in London), and Lewis & Clark College (in Oregon), the library has a large collection of English-language books. However, because nobody on the library staff reads English, none of the books had been entered into the online catalog. During my stay, I transliterated into Cyrillic the title, author's name, and publication information for each book. In addition, I translated the subject matter of each book into Russian. This enabled the library staff to finally enter the books into the online catalog. I also took an inventory of the library's English-language collection so that Professor Hoffmann can determine which books to purchase for Adilet with the Soros grant money earmarked for book purchases.

Everyone I met in Kazakhstan was incredibly friendly and hospitable, the mountains were gorgeous, and the food was delicious. I had a wonderful time!
