DEVELOPMENT NEWS

*New service award established

Herbert White, retired dean of the School of Library and Information Sciences and benefactor of the Herbert and Virginia White Professional Development Award, will reward creative activity at the IU Bloomington Libraries. The activity should supplement the baseline services for which state funding is available.

The Herbert S. White Collaborative Award will recognize collaborative efforts developed by two or more IUB Libraries employees. Projects should demonstrate employee initiatives that extend beyond daily operational duties and broadly support the goals of the IUB Libraries strategic plan. Specifically, projects should increase the quality of service the IUB Libraries provide to students and faculty on the Bloomington campus by introducing partnerships or collaborations that cross departmental or campus lines, including work with faculty, information technologists, or other service providers. Collaborations should demonstrate the pivotal role of the IUB Libraries to the Bloomington campus and highlight the substantive and essential contributions of the IUB Libraries employees.

AWARD PURPOSE: To recognize collaboration among IUB Libraries employees who improve service to students and faculty; to support the teaching and learning mission of Indiana University.

AWARD: The $2,500 award, to be divided equally among the collaborators, may be spent by the recipients to:

* further benefit the project
* project-related travel
* fund collections or departmental equipment

ELIGIBILITY: IUB Libraries support staff, PAs, and librarians.

ADMINISTRATION: Awarded by a committee comprising representatives from each of the three staffing categories: support staff, PA, and librarian. IU Libraries human resources officer and development officer are ex-officio members.

PROCEDURE: Applications should be submitted to Libraries Human Resources.

DEADLINE: April 30, 2002

*15th annual HPER Library Auction

CIRCLE THE DATE!

The 15th Annual HPER Library Auction will take place on Friday, October 26th!

Auction will begin at 12 noon, and continue until 1:15pm.

Location: HPER Building, Room 125.

Time: Preview of items up for bid: 11:30am- 12 noon.

To mark the 15th anniversary of the Auction, many special items will be offered for bidding and several special guests will be on hand. We will even have a professional auctioneer this year to keep the process moving. Please consider donating a wonderful piece of "junk," a gourmet treat, perennials from your garden,books, videos, or CDs. Last year the highlight was a Victorian "fainting couch," that started a bidding war. Proceeds from this event go to the HPER Library and are used for books and equipment. We already have several nifty items that have been donated this Fall: tickets to the IU Auditorium, books from IU Press, a wicker love seat, and dog training lessons. We anticipate many more in the coming weeks.

Please contact us if you have ideas for donations. We can arrange to pick up large items from your home, if you are unable to bring them in. As always, we will give you a receipt and a credit slip for tax purposes in the amount of the value of your donation, if you wish. It is not necessary for certain items to be present on the day of the Auction; we will be glad to make a certificate with a description of your donation on it, and the winning bidder will contact you.

In conjunction with the Auction, the School of HPER Support Staff Council will be hosting a Sloppy Joe lunch in the same room, beginning at 11:30am. This is a VERY popular event, so come early and have lunch while your browse amongst the items that will be auctioned off. This year will also be School of HPER Dean Tony Mobley's last "official" HPER Library Auction (he will retire in June), and we will have some surprises for him. He was one of the founders and continues to lend his support to this event annually.

We welcome and rely upon your generous donations, so please consider making one this year. The HPER Library Auction is a great way spend a lunch hour, and brings faculty, staff, and students together for food, fun and a great cause! We look forward to seeing you on Oct. 26th! Feel free to E-mail any of us if you have questions.
