*Lilly Library Acquires Kurt Vonnegut Papers
The Lilly Library at Indiana University Bloomington has acquired the manuscripts and correspondence of Kurt Vonnegut, acclaimed author of Slaughterhouse Five and Player Piano. The thousands of pages of Vonnegut's literary papers also include typescripts, first editions, and about 50 rejection slips from the 1940s.
"Vonnegut has become a literary icon for many," says Lisa Browar, Lilly Librarian. "In the 1970s, his short stories and novels captured the mood of a country disillusioned by the war in Southeast Asia. Today, he is acknowledged for his astonishing literary range and as a social critic whose wit and irreverence expose society's frailties."
Vonnegut is author of several novels, including The Sirens of Titan, Player Piano, Mother Night, Cat's Cradle, and Timequake, and hundreds of published short stories. Captured by the German's while serving in the U.S. Air Force in World War II, Vonnegut was one of the survivors of the fire bombing of Dresden in 1945. Slaughterhouse Five, perhaps Vonnegut's most recognizable novel, is based on this experience. After the war, Vonnegut studied anthropology at the University of Chicago; later, he worked as a reporter and as a public relations writer.
Vonnegut, a native of Indianapolis, was granted an honorary doctorate from Indiana University in 1973.

*IUPUI University Library Honors Hoosier Poet
October 7, 1999 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of the famed Indiana poet James Whitcomb Riley. That day is also the 75th anniversary of the dedication of the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children. The IUPUI University Library Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives celebrates these two milestones with the opening of its new exhibit "Riley Memories: 75 Years of Caring."
James Whitcomb Riley was one of America's most popular writers during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and schoolchildren in Indianapolis celebrated his birthday each year. Following his death in 1916 in 1916, Riley's friends sought a suitable memorial to him. Their choice was to build a hospital for children, the first institution of its kind in Indiana.
Riley Hospital for Children opened in 1924, and during the subsequent 75 years has provided world-class care to thousands of children. "Riley Memories: 75 Years of Caring" traces the history of the hospital through photographs and publications, looking at the staff who made Riley Hospital a special place, the celebrities who visited the hospital, and, most importantly, the children who have been patients at Riley.
"Riley Memories: 75 Years of Caring" is on display through December 18th in the Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives, located in Room UL 0133 in the Lower Level of the University Library. Hours are 8 AM-5 PM Monday, Thursday and Friday, 8 AM-8 PM Tuesday and Wednesday, and 8 AM-noon on Saturday. For further information, please call (317)274-0464.

*Video Conference at IU Bloomington
Last year BERSERC sponsored two video-conferences about licensing and copyright issues concerned with electronic resources. For the upcoming ARL/SLA videoconference, "Effective Negotiating Techniques for Licensing Content", the IUB Libraries will be purchasing the videotape after-the-fact and hold a follow-up meeting in November. This will allow us to plan for the video viewing, suggest appropriate reading and preparation, and scheduling. With the many comittments we all have on our calendars for early October, we thought this approach might be better at this time. Please email Lou Malcomb if you have other suggested approaches for the future about ARL videoconferences. The videoconference will be hosted live at IUPUI and is scheduled for October 14th 1-4p.m. EDT.
