As the United Way Campaign begins to gain momentum, I want to take this opportunity to solicit your participation, no matter what the size of the contribution. The Libraries can be a significant factor in the success of the Indiana University campaign because we are one of the largest units on campus. I have already made my contribution and urge you to do the same.

As residents of Bloomington, Monroe County, and Indiana, United Way's services grace our lives in so many ways by providing to those in need of help. I urge you to give generously to this year's campaign - "Help us Celebrate the Power of U in Our Community". You can make a difference!

5. IUPUI University Libraries Community Project

Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) University Libraries, in partnership with the Art Museum Image Consortium (AMICO) of North America, have been awarded a National Leadership Grant of $290,000 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

The IMLS is a Federal agency that fosters innovation, leadership and a lifetime of learning by supporting museums and libraries. The institute's library programs help libraries use new technologies to identify, preserve and share library and information resources across institutional, local and state boundaries.

AMICO is a consortium of over 23 major North American art museums that have joined in partnership to test the delivery of electronic images of their museum collections over the World Wide Web. Presently, the AMICO Library contains more than 20,000 art images, which represent the collections of premier museums including the George Eastman House, Center for Creative Photography, J. Paul Getty Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, National Gallery of Canada, Art Institute of Chicago and National Museum of American Art.

The AMICO digital library primarily consists of two-dimensional Western art and is available in four resolutions for browsing, searching, classroom projection, and other educational uses. In addition the digital collection includes: 1,000 19th and 500 20th century photographs; 1,000 Asian drawings and paintings; 1,000 ancient and medieval works; 1,000 decorative objects and sculptures; and over 1,000 modern and contemporary works of art.

The IUPUI University Libraries provide university students, faculty, staff and the general community with world class facilities, supporting an information system that makes access to local, national and global educational resources readily available. It was among sixteen major North American university libraries recently selected by AMICO to serve as an educational testbed site for the 1998/1999 academic year. Other university sites include Yale, Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, Carnegie Mellon, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and Washington University. As a member of the testbed project, IUPUI University Library and the Herron Art Library, in collaboration with the other national academic library sites, will define guidelines for licensing and use of the AMICO Image Library.

With funds provided through the IMLS National Leadership Grant, the IUPUI University Library, Herron Art Library and AMICO will offer access to the AMICO Digital Image Database for the Greater Indianapolis Area K-12 schools and general public. The project provides a unique mechanism to test various conveyance models of the fine art images to an urban educational community and its interested "lifelong learners" using public libraries in Central Indiana.

For further information regarding this project, please contact Sonja Staum-Kuniej, at the IUPUI University Libraries' Herron Art Library at (317)920-2432.

6. IUPUI Library Hosts National Touring Exhibition Reminder:

The University Library of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) will serve as a regional host for a national traveling exhibition to America's libraries, organized by the American Library Association. The Frontier in American Culture, scheduled for presentation September 3 - October 15, 1998, was organized in cooperation with and based on the Graff and Ayer collections of the Newberry Library, Chicago.

The national exhibition explores how a single set of cultural icons (Log Cabins, Covered Wagons, Pioneers, Indians, Frontier Farms) has resonated so powerfully among a diverse national population, and examines the stories Americans tell about this country's frontier past. To understand the attractiveness and influence of the frontier, this exhibition looks at two compelling sources of frontier stories: Frederick Jackson Turner's famous lecture and article, "The Significance of the Frontier in American History," and Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders.

To supplement the presentation of the exhibition, the IUPUI University Library will host a series of presentations, activities and displays featuring faculty, authors and professionals of IUPUI and other Midwest universities, and partnerships with Indianapolis cultural institutions. The focus of these programs will include the national frontier perspective, as well as that of the Old Northwest and Indiana Territory. (See below for a complete schedule of activities).

Exhibition programs presented by the IUPUI University Library are free to the public and will take place in the Library facility located on the IUPUI campus at 755 West Michigan Street. For general exhibition information, call (317) 278-0232, (317) 274-4586 or go to the University Library Internet address of http://www-lib.iupui.edu/frontier/

Funding for the national exhibition has been provided by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Washington, D.C. Local funding for this program has been provided by the Indiana Humanities Council.
