*The information on Charles Hoffman in last week's IUL News was
incorrect.
Charles is the Collection Acquisitions Coordinator for West European
Studies at IU Bloomington. His office is located in E1060 of the Main
Library.
On October 13, the second floor of Ernie Pyle Hall was flooded, forcing
the closure of much of that floor. Water leaked down to the first floor
and was found in areas very near the Journalism Library. Although the
Library suffered no damage, the possibility of damage was quite real, and
I'd like to thank Jo Burgess, Head of Conservation Services, and her staff
for their prompt response in helping make sure our books and periodicals
were protected. I'd also like to thank Linda Butler, who discovered the
problem and called Preservation, and the rest of the Journalism Library
staff who assisted in this effort.
The Archives of Traditional Music (ATM) and the Digital Library Program
(DLP) at IU Bloomington have created a display to commemorate the birth of
songwriter Hoagy Carmichael in the Main Library lobby cases. We have been
working for over a year to digitize the university's Carmichael
collections, with funding from the Institute for Museum and Library
Services (IMLS). The impetus for the project is the centennial of
Carmichael's birth on November 22, 1999. In addition to material from the
ATM, the library display includes artifacts from the University Archives,
period artifacts from private collections, and information about the
upcoming (DLP) web site, which we will launch November 1, 1999. Special
thanks go to Aaron Reichert, Julie Hardesty, Melanie Hughes, Rich
Remsberg, Suzanne Mudge, Phil Bantin, and Brad Cook for their
contributions to the display. It's informative and attractive. Please
stop by and take a look and watch news here about the new web site. For
information about the project, see:

What if we ran our libraries like Amazon.com? We could drop our local
catalogs and allow patrons to select anything from the 40 million items
in OCLC's WorldCat. We could stock only the most commonly requested titles
and rely on other libraries, wholesalers, and publishers to support the
rest. We could use the Internet, electronic delivery, and low-cost
shipping to bring the library to our patrons rather than requiring our
patrons to come to us.
