Ellen Maher, Associate Librarian and Head of Collection Development at the Franklin D. Schurz Library, was the luncheon speaker at the District One Conference of the Indiana Library Federation, held at the University of Notre Dame on October 13. Her topic was Guards and Gumshoes: Librarians in '90's Murder Mysteries. Also presenting at the conference were Nancy Wootton Colborn, Assistant Librarian; Michele Russo, Director; and Beth Schuck, Visiting Assistant Librarian. They team taught Customer Service with CLASS: Customers Leaving Appreciative, Satisfied and Sold. The Customer Service Training is required for all new employees of the Library.

This is a 12-month full time tenure track position requiring professional development and service in addition to excellent performance. IUK offers a small campus atmosphere which focuses on student success while maintaining access to the extensive library and computer facilities of the main campus (IU Bloomington) and opportunities for research and teaching collaboration across the IU system. The position reports to the Library Director. Salary: $37,000-$38,500 with excellent benefits.
RESPONSIBLE FOR effective and efficient operation of all aspects of the technical services department (cataloguing, acquisitions, serials, processing and binding); maintenance of online NOTIS catalog; supervision and training of clerical staff; attend the reference desk; and assist with library instruction activities. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: ALA accredited masters degree in library science, or equivalent; minimum 6 years experience in an academic library; demonstrated experience in acquisitions and cataloging functions of technical services; OCLC cataloging and NOTIS based systems experience; supervisory/training experience; knowledge of microcomputer hardware and software; familiarity with basic reference sources, bibliographic and research techniques, computer-based library services, and information needs of a diverse community of users; excellent verbal and written communication skills, including an ability to relate to a wide variety of library users; ability to meet the responsibilities and requirements of a tenure-track appointment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: ability to work well independently and in a team situation; ability to promote friendly relations and work cooperatively with other librarians on campus, in the locale, and in the IU Libraries system.

5. Polish Exhibition At The Fine Arts Library
WITH HEART AND HAND: POLISH RELIGIOUS FOLK ART ON EXHIBIT AT THE FINE ARTS LIBRARY
October 8 - November 29, 1998
In celebration of Polish Heritage Month, the Fine Arts Library is pleased to host an exhibition organized by the Polish Studies Center which brings some of Walter Whipple's collection of Polish folk art to IU. Professor Whipple, an amateur collector and professor of Eastern European cultures and languages at Brigham Young University, has the largest private collection of Polish folk art in the United States. The collection was recently on display at the Brigham Young University Museum of Fine Arts.
Professor Whipple acquired most of his collection of folk art while living in Poland between 1990 and 1993. The contemporary art works on display include sculpture, relief sculpture, and reverse glass painting.
-- The Lilly Library at Indiana University, with support from the Indiana Humanities Council, is sponsoring an exhibition in celebration of the American Short Story. "One Hundred and Fifty Years of the American Short Story, 1819-1968" opened to the public on Saturday, September 12 and will run through December 15. The exhibition is designed to inform Indiana residents and students about the history of this genre and to convey the literary and sociological importance of the short story in America.
