Effective November 4, Ben Baker has accepted the Technical Services Assistant position that is half time in the Education Library and half time in the HPER Library. Ben has worked full-time in Customer and Facilities Services since November of 1997 and hourly since January 1997.
In her capacity as president, Cinda May convened the twenty-ninth annual meeting of the Midwestern American Society for Eighteenth Century Studies, October 8-10, in Mackinaw City, Michigan. Ms. May also organized and chaired a conference panel titled, "From Subscription to Bookseller to Private Library," which explored the dissemination of books, issues of readership and the personal and public lives of individuals for whom books were a necessary part of existence.
Effective October 30, Charla Lancaster (Westbrook) has resigned from her position as Office Services Assistant in Customer & Facilities Services.
2. New Employee Orientation Reception
Reception for New Librarians, Professionals, and Support Staff
The Libraries Faculty/Staff Development Committee is planning its semi-annual orientation program for new librarians, professionals, and support staff. This year, the Committee will again have an informal reception for all employees appointed during the last six months. Please join us on Friday, November 6, between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. in the Main Library Third Floor Staff Lounge for refreshments, and take this opportunity to meet your newest colleagues.

Monday, November 2 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. Whittenberger Auditorium, or IMU, IU Bloomington 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. or 2:00 - 3:30 p.m.
Bring the open enrollment packet with you to the program that you attend. Remember that the deadline to apply is November 25. All changes will be effective January 1, 1999.
4. AACC Library Book Talk Series
African American Cultural Center Library Book Talk Series
Please join us for the last book talk of the 1998 Fall Semester at the African American Cultural Center (room 104 of Ashton/Coulter Hall, Union & 7th Street) on November 12th, 4pm until 5:30.
Dr. Gloria Gibson, Associate Professor of Afro-American Studies, will be moderating discussion of a collection of twelve essays titled _Black Looks: Race and Representation_ on November 12th. The book is available at the AACC Library, and at the Main Library on 3 hour reserve. The Book Talk Series is an informal gathering of I.U. students, faculty, and staff who read & discuss books by contemporary African American authors.
The Book Talk Series will continue in the 1999 Spring Semester beginning in February, schedule and book titles to be announced. Thank you.

5. BLFC Sponsoring Grant Program
When You Have a Great Idea But No Money...
Obtaining financial support for research or a special project can be frustrating and difficult. To aid you in your quest for adequate funding, the BLFC Continuing Education Committee is sponsoring an upcoming program centered around the delicate art of grantsmanship. The principal speaker will be Marcia Landen from the Sponsored Research Services Office of RUGS (Research & The University Graduate School). She will offer advice on how to locate funding sources and share strategies on how to prepare a successful grant proposal. Other speakers will include librarians who have either been recipients of grants or have served as readers of grant proposals.
