*In Memory Of Julieann V. Nilson, IUB

Julieann V. Nilson, whose employment with Indiana University Libraries spanned four decades, died peacefully Friday, October 25th from complications of cancer.

Born July 19, 1938, in Chicago, Julie earned her B.A. in English at Indiana University in 1963, and then, while working for the Indiana University Libraries, completed her M.L.S. in 1966. She was employed by Indiana University as a cataloger, department head in Acquisitions, and most recently as the Librarian for Latin American, Iberian, and Chicano-Riqueño Studies.

From her early language training in Portuguese under the auspices of a Ford Foundation grant to her professional service as the Libraries' Latin American Studies cataloger and her more recent leadership in the CIC's coordinated preservation microfilming of Latin American materials, Nilson strengthened IU's collections and services. She was a founding member of MOLLAS, the Midwest Organization of Libraries for Latin American Studies, and hosted their annual meeting in Bloomington, Ind. in August 2001. Her professional affiliations include the American Library Association, ACRL, LITA, and ALCTS, Indiana Library Association, and the Indiana University Librarians Association (InULA). She devoted her recent professional activity to SALALM (Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials).

Julie's leadership in library and faculty governance committees is legendary, and she leaves a long list of accomplishments and partnerships on the campus. In 1990, Julie received The William Evan Jenkins Librarian Award in recognition of her contributions to librarianship and the Indiana University Libraries. Her many colleagues and friends in the Libraries will especially remember Julie's commitment to advancing faculty status for all librarians, her sense of humor, and her devotion to mentoring those new to the profession.

The local community also benefited from Julie's energy and involvement. She was an avid arts collector, supporting many local artists and craftsmen as well as serving on the Bloomington Area Arts Council (BAAC). Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Community Kitchen, Middle Way House, BAAC, and the Monroe County Humane Society.
