*Carole Nowicke (Indiana Prevention Resource Center) participated in a recreation of Abraham Lincoln's Innaugural Ball at the Lincoln Museum in Ft. Wayne on October 16th as part of the "Queen's Quadrille and Quickstep Society Orchestra." The balls are biennial fundraisers by the museum. The QQQSO is one of the period ensembles directed by Dr. Henry Meredith of the University of Western Ontario. Carole, in period costume, performed on ophicleide, over-the-shoulder-saxhorn, alto horn and tuba.
*Other Library Catalogs On The IUCAT Menus
The connections to catalogs from locations other than IU (e.g., Purdue, Michigan, Indiana State, Notre Dame) have been removed from the IUCAT menus. Some of the catalogs have migrated to the Web and are no longer available through Z39.50 connections. Recently, we have also experienced problems with all our Z39.50 connections from NOTIS to other libraries.
All of the catalogs are available from the World Wide Web. We have added a NEWS screen to assist patrons and staff to locate these catalogs.
Library and UITS staff will continue to work to re-establish the connections to Big Ten and other Indiana libraries through IUCAT. Catalogs will be added back to the menu when a Z39.50 connection can be established.
If you have questions or problems, please contact Gwen Pershing (pershing@indiana.edu) or Mary Popp (popp@indiana.edu).
A web page has been established at http://www.indiana.edu/~sirsi/ to disseminate information about the SIRSI implementation at Indiana University.
The pages which comprise this site are intended for internal IU use only and are not accessible from outside the IU campuses.
This site will contain the minutes from all working group meetings and will feature the latest timeline information available. Announcements may be occasionally sent (e.g. in IUL News) to notify staff of updates to various pages, but staff are encouraged to bookmark the main page now for easy reference, as the content will be continuously updated as information becomes available.
*Special Libraries Association Presentation
Special Libraries Association - Indiana Chapter is pleased to present
We Are As Others See Us
...a light-hearted, multi-media look at the way librarians have been depicted in comics and the movies.
Guest Speaker: Steven J. Schmidt
Sponsored by RoweCom
Thursday, November 11, 1999
Capital Conference Center - Auditorium
201 North Illinois Street, Suite 200 - Downtown Indianapolis*
Steven J. Schmidt is a librarian, although a lot of people tell him that he doesn't look like one. Librarians, in many people's minds, are elderly spinsters who wear sensible shoes, keep their hair up in buns, and go "Shush!" whenever someone dares to breathe too loudly. This stereotype has been created and frequently reinforced by nearly a century of cartoons, movies, and TV shows.
His forthcoming book, Check Us Out: The Depiction of Libraries and Librarians in the Movies, is an annotated filmography of over five hundred films depicting libraries and librarians. McFarland Press is scheduled to publish this fun, fact-filled book in the spring of 2001. Meeting attendees will have the first opportunity for a "sneak preview" during this entertaining presentation.
When he isn't at the movies, Mr. Schmidt serves as the Access Services Librarian Team Leader at IUPUI University Library and Project Director for ERROL, that institution's electronic imaging project. In 1992 the Indiana Library Federation named Mr. Schmidt Outstanding Librarian of the Year. He recently completed a term as president of that organization.

*Ownership of Instructional Materials/Copyright Discussion
Whose Work is it Anyway???
Exploring Copyright Ownership of Instructional Materials at IU.
Controversies in the news about "lecture notes" on the Web, and concerns at the university about "who owns my instructional website," raise difficult legal issues. Copyright law often determines the ownership of copyrighted works by default, and not always to the satisfaction of authors, employers, and publishers. Institutional policies, such as the IU Intellectual Property Policy, may create a more equitable result for some materials, and personal agreements can allow innovative sharing of ownership rights. This program will examine alternatives for better managing your own intellectual property, and it will provide an overview of IP policies and procedures for addressing the ownership of instructional materials that we create here at IU.
Join the Copyright Management Center for a wide-ranging discussion, which will take place on Thursday, November 11, 1999, 10:00 - 11:30 AM, in the University Library Auditorium on the campus of IUPUI.
The program is open to all, but seating is limited. Please let us know if
you plan to attend by calling (317) 274-4400, by sending your reservation
to copyinfo@iupui.edu, or by
reaching us through the Copyright Management Center website at http://www.iupui.edu/~copyinfo/.
