*Marty Joachim Retiring, IUB
Marty Joachim is retiring from the IU Libraries after many years of service, but we are very happy to announce that he plans to stay on working as a volunteer three days a week in the Western European Original Cataloging Unit and as a volunteer for two days a week at the Lilly Library.
Marty's career began way back in 1959, when he worked in the library's filing section. He received his BA in Classical Languages and Literatures from Indiana University in 1961 and his MA in 1962. He returned in 1963 as a student assistant, and his chief responsibility was bibliographic searching. In 1966, he received his MA in Library Science from Indiana University.
In February of 1965, he was hired as a cataloger in the former Cataloging Dept. in the old Main Library, and he was responsible for cataloging materials in classical languages and literatures, philosophy, archaeology, history and philosophy of science, religion, comparative literature, history, psychology, and physical education. He also cataloged all materials in Latin, Greek, and Romanian.
In 1977, he accepted the position of Head of the Cataloging Department, replacing Miss Mary Helen Stanger, who retired. He held that position until 1988, when he became the Principal Cataloger. Cataloging has always been Marty's first love, and he is recognized both locally and nationally as an expert in the field. We all marvel at his ability to not only cite cataloging rules, but also to cite the exact rule numbers!
Marty was the person chiefly responsible for implementing the NACO program here at IU, and he has served as a trainer and reviewer locally and at many other institutions over the years. He was the manager, coordinator, and grant writer for IU's Title IIC grants for Early English Books, 1641-1700 (Wing STC), Three Centuries of English & American Plays, 1500-1830, and English & American Drama of the Nineteenth Century. He also was the manager of the original cataloging component of a Title IIC grant project for the retrospective conversion of folklore materials.
For several years, in addition to his regular duties, Marty also has been training catalogers at the University Archives and reviewing their work.
In 1987, he was the co-recipient of the William Evans Jenkins award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the Indiana University Libraries and to the library profession in general. In 1988, he was a recipient of an InULA Research Incentive Grant. He has been a member of the Editorial Board of Cataloging and Classification Quarterly since 1985. Since 1992, he has been a member of the Indiana University Review and Selection Committee for Wells Scholars Program.
Marty has served on numerous local, regional, and national library committees and task forces during his many years as an IU librarian. He has many important publications to his credit. The latest, published by Haworth Press this year, is Historical Aspects of Cataloging and Classification, which he edited. This book includes articles by many authors from around the world.
We wish Marty the very best in his retirement, and we are very happy that he will be continuing in his service to the IU Libraries as a volunteer. We will continue to enjoy his unparalleled cataloging expertise, his problem-solving skills, and his droll sense of humor. Thank you, Marty, for all you have done for the IU Libraries.

*Sheet Music Metadata HarvestingThe Digital Library Program has been working with UCLA and Johns Hopkins University since March 2002 to create a sheet music metadata harvesting service, using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). In November, we brought up an OAI version 2 data service provider and began offering metadata for the DeVincent Sheet Music Collection from Lilly Library and other collections. We also participated in Mellon-funded usability testing, which will be the basis for changes in the coming months. Currently, the service provides more than 60,000 records for both digitized and undigitzed sheet music harvested from the Library of Congress, Johns Hopkins, UCLA, and IU. Although it is still under development, you are invited to search the database and see how it works: http://digidev.library.ucla.edu/oaisheetmusic/. Over the coming months, we will be adding metadata for more sheet music at the four institutions and other institutions and making improvements to the searching and interface. For more information about the project, see the article in the fall 2002 issue of The Source, "Searching for Sheet Music."
My thanks to everyone who has contributed to this project to date, including Elizabeth Johnson, Becky Cape, Harriette Hemassi, Jenn Riley, Michelle Dalmau, Arwen Hutt, Jon Dunn, and Kurt Whitsel. I would also like to thank any of you who participated in the focus groups or usability testing last month. Your input was invaluable. We have lots of work ahead of us but have made incredible progress in a short time.
